Summary: A ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy.

Very close to the graphic novel (which I love). But what works on paper doesn't work on film. The lack of character development really jumps out at me and the film suffers because of it.

Coming from the video game generation, the only problem I can say I had with this movie was that if I held the controller, I wouldn't have missed Xerxes.

A monumentally extended wank. Visually the battle scenes impress (CG blood, the capes, the shields), but they don't forgive the shouting, the slow-motion, the self-referencing, the 'sword as a penis' scene, the 'we're NOT gay' scenes, etc. I also want to hear Dilios' entire narration that is supposedly evoking these visuals: 'then this really fat bastard with swords for arms and chains attached to his nipples wearing only a dog collar and loin cloth, like totally chops the generals heads off'

300 did everything perfectly. It told the story, which happens to be one of the greatest ever told (not an opinion, but rather a fact), in a manner that transitions gloriously to film. The visuals are breath-taking, and the action will shake you. The plot, extended beyond Frank Miller's fantastic book, enriches the emotion and meaning of the story without altering the original Spartan passion. Awesome!

It's always good when a film launches a thousand internet memes...and 300 is one of those films. A rather sculpted Gerard Butler takes on an army of epic proportions...and loses, but hey, if he did it with style..what does it matter? Coming from the pen of Frank Miller, the creator of Sin City, 300 also takes on a dynamic visual style which makes the incredible action sequences seem almost real. The only downside is that it makes the scenes back in Sparta seem slow and loborious. This is Sparta!

The lacking plot and development (and the sudden ending) let it down immensely, but I thought there was just enough excellent film-making to make it entertaining for other reasons, naked muscly men notwithstanding.
