Keanu Reeves is good in this, seriously. In the beginning I was thinking standard indy fare, but it turned out much better than that (I thought). The main character becomes likeable, and I found myself agreeing with a lot of his points. Great cast too.

Ho-hum. Another one of these "slice of life" character study movies (with the standard indie soundtrack) where people deal with life's little problems and learn lessons that don't really mean much of anything. I can watch stuff like this without complaint, but I'm pretty sick of it and there's not much to be gained from the experience.

This tries too hard to be "quirky and independent" - famous actors (Bratt, Reeves) playing strange supporting characters delivering odd pronouncements on life, Elliott Smith covering classic folk-rock songs, etc- and, consequently, it becomes hard to become involved with the story.

Top badass moment? This film is like Iver Station. (It’s near Slough, for the geographically challenged.) No trains stop there on Sundays, so going there on a Sunday would be pointless and nothing much would happen; (except for announcements about the train approaching platform whatever not stopping and to stand behind the yellow line or you’ll be smeared along a mile of track). Despite this, Thumbsucker manages to be more entertaining than Iver Station. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

At no point was I really sure what the point of this film was, because it lacks any sense of real importance to the goingson. Nonetheless, the acting is exceptional by nearly everyone. I just wish that there was something more concrete to care about and that it was as funny as it was hyped up to be. Instead, I had no one to root for, too few laughs released, and at the end I merely thought... Meh!

Alright, this film hit me on more of a personal level than any other film has. I loved this movie. I think Lou Pucci did such an amazing job in the lead and deserves some sort of recognition for his acting chops. I loved every single performance in this movie, from the tounge in cheek character like Benjamin Bratt to Vince Vaughn's surprisngly stark portrayal of Pucci's teacher. The usage of Elliot Smith in the movie just sealed the deal for me. I'm sure I'm in the minority for this one, but

Surprisingly sweet indie has not a harmful bone in its body. What begins as just another Sundance darling ends up in unpredictable, unforseen places, particularly thanks to a wonderful cast of ringers.

A very bizarre, but very enjoyable indie flick about one young man coming of age. Lou Pucci is very strong in his first leading role, and supporting performances from Tilda Swinton and Keanu Reeves help elevate this film above your typical indie sleeper.

Not quite as "cloying precious indie treasure" as Chumscrubber or Me and You and Everyone We Know...but it's close. Awesome performances from the entire cast, an extremely likeable main character and a good ending manage to wash out the really wispy plot.

This movie couldn't find it's purpose. It teeters around aimlessly, trying to be like a high school version of The Graduate if it were directed by David O. Russell's retarded half cousin.

Fairly standard indie fodder. I typically despise Vaughn and Reeves, but I thought they turned in good performances. The story is engaging, and at no point did I feel bored, but it's the type of movie that leaves no impression on you after the credits roll.

I was disappointed by the book adaptation. If I hadn't read the book and been excited about the movie, I might have seen it differently. I think the movie kind of misses the point and what you get is a nothing special story about a kid making his way through high school. The book had a bit more depth. It wasn't all bad, but disappointing for sure.

A nice little film that's worthy of your hour and a half. It's not perfect, and is occasionally a cliche "indie" film, but first-time director Mike Mills handles his characters with care, creating a compelling film that deals with some relevant societal issues. The acting is what really elevates the film, and everyone here turns in great performances (especially Reeves). D'Onofrio and Swinton steal the show as the parents, and the Elliot Smith/Polyphonic Spree soundtrack is a keeper too.

The film is well crafted, especially the acting performances but that's all it really was to me. This would get an even lower score if it wasn't for those things but I can appreciate a competently made movie, but I couldn't get involved in this. Really, the only flaw is a bit one... it wanders around the point it's trying to make and never engaged me so I found myself getting bored and struggling through it. Others have clearly found more, but that's my word, yo.

Pucci is talented, as evidenced by his being the only thing holding this film together. Hell, the titular habit disappeared for 85% of it. Keanu delivers an enjoyably bewildering performance. It's superficially Shatner-ian, and yet a clever, earnest mind shines through. Other than these two, though, I didn't buy much of it.

Typical underwhelming indie; a good idea mixed with a lot of not so good ones, resulting into a weak script - and there's not enough of Kelli.G to make this less forgettable or especially more enjoyable. *Preview*: #12#, exp-3*, story, (reviews), Kelli.G!/, R2.

I thought it was nicely directed, visually, and in the editing and acting; Mills sets a lovely tone, and he's an expert at montages. The script isn't so great, with an only intermittently interesting protagonist and a weak third act, but I felt like it worked in spite of this.

Quirky Indie dramedies were all the rage in the early to mid 2000s and while this checks many of the usual boxes, it's one of the better ones, keeping its head above the sea of whimsy and blessed with a splendid central performance by Lou Taylor Pucci.

Thumbsucker is part coming-of-age story and part pop-philosophy wrapped into a film that indulges in its characters' obnoxious behaviours. The film delivers a believable portrait of teenage angst composed of horniness, isolation & paranoia without going too far, but in doing so fails to make it entertaining to watch. The film also touches upon mental health issues, but doesn't really deal with it in any significant way. Reeves, Swinton, D'Onofrio & Vaughn are all well-cast, but limited by scope.

Wonderfully and warmly observant character study is steeped in the tropes of mid-aught indies but makes up for it thanks to first-rate performances all round - Reeves is a special delight as a very "Zen" dentist (and hilarious cyclist), but the whole cast provide particular portraits of their potentially familiar archetypes. Held together by Pucci's convincingly nebbishy lead; Mills' screenplay has enough painful and hard learned truths to make a memorable addition to the coming-of-ager canon.
