Summary: After her mother dies from a heroin overdose, Jeliza-Rose is taken from the big city to a rural farmhouse by her father. As she tries to settle into a new life in a house her father had purchased for his now-deceased mother, Jeliza-Rose's attempts to deal with what's happened result in increasingly odd behavior, as she begins to communicate mainly with her bodiless Barbie doll heads and Dell, a neighborhood woman who always wears a beekeeper's veil. Although this movie is much weirder and more disturbing than any of Gilliam's earlier movies, I could relate much better to it than to Brazil for instance.

Creepy Southern gothic whose bursts of perverse imagination don't do enough to derail the long bouts of tedium. Kinda love how it revels in discomforting areas surrounding childhood's ignorance of the larger world.

Creepy. Taxidermy?! Totally uncalled for. Lacked the feeling of whimsy I'd generally associate with childhood fantasies but was instead weighed down by the never ending sense of dread. "Children are resilient"? More like "audiences who can sit through the whole thing are resilient"! I'm a fan of Gilliam's work but just not this one.

This isn't going to endear me to, well, basically everyone, but I really like this, moreso than some of Gilliam's acknowledged classics (12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing). My favourite thing about it is that Jeliza-Rose is such a disturbingly ignorant girl, who'll happily play with the corpse of her father. It's highly unusual to watch. Despite that, it's also a very lovely-looking film.

I actively disliked this film - probably because I have an aversion to plotlines which follow the following formula: naive children some kind of horrible danger = a long period of tension followed by something horrible, inevitably, happening. Perhaps I'm being too harsh on it.

A neglected innocent young girl tries to cope with a disturbing world. Sure, it's pretty creepy but Gilliam doesn't wants the viewer to focus on the creepy elements - he wants the viewer to see the events of the movie from the perspective of this child. Gilliam is successful in fulfilling this aim and the final result is a challenging but also strangely charming movie.

I almost feel bad rating this since I could not make it past the halfway point. I just couldn't. I quickly soured on all the characters and their delivery. A complete waste of time and effort, although it does look quite pretty.

"At times it feels like its exploring the dangers of uncontrolled imagination in a kind of twisted Alice in Wonderland (Gilliam describes it as a mix of Psycho and Alice), but the little-girl theatrics and doll-playing gets tiresome after a while, and the movie just seems to meander. A fascinating dark flight of fancy as long as you aren't expecting a point."

Top badass moment? Probably Dickens' submarine. Having your own submarine when you live in the middle of a huge field of dead looking grass miles from the sea, has to be badass. (It wasn't exactly a real submarine though). 0 cats and 0 decapitations. However, there're some cute bunnies and a squirrel, and a dead person does get her head sort of badly dented.

The visuals and the seamless flow of music with the images are still there for Gilliam; but his stories has lost their magic. This one felt intentionally awkward and tries too aggressively to off-put you, which made it boring in my opinion. But man the kid is something else as an actress. Jodelle Farland is a gem and the movie allowed her to shine.

Terry Gilliam goes beyond his usual level of "wtf?" in this unsettling oddity. Unforgettable, but I feel it kinda fails to fulfill its potential, and I thought it was a little more shallow than it tried to be.

Days of Heaven showed the beauty of the prairie, Tideland makes it disgusting. It's a filthy film, and probably the first time I've ever truly felt like I needed a shower after a movie. It's hard to watch and brings up memories of the first time I saw Eraserhead. One of Gilliam's best by far.

It's Alice in Wonderland set in the same universe as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. What's not to love? Okay, so dark spins on fairy tales are a cliché at this point, but Gilliam's world is so vividly drawn and bracingly dark (he takes the insinuations of child abuse and molestation way further than I ever expected) that it never feels like a retread. And that aside, Jodelle Ferland is absolutely amazing in the lead, delivering what may be the best child performance I've ever seen.
