Intense and wonderfully acted. Malden has a good eye for the small details - little moments like ogling a watch and fumbling with a map give his movie a strong sense of life. It's a shame this was his only director's credit.

A stage-bound movie, but an intelligently written one, without any easy heroes or reassuring villains. Karl Malden, a fine actor himself, knows how to direct his talented stars, and Basehart and Widmark are very fine--particularly in their scenes together. Also worthy of note is a young Rip Torn, who delivers a fine performance in a difficult supporting role.
