Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (in her feature film debut) must outsmart nazi spies. The pair Bogart/Bacall has onscreen chemestry, but the plot lacks tension.

The comparsion to Casablanca is inevitable, and it doesn't quite hold up. But still a solid movie with great chemistry between Bogart and Bacall

Bogart and Bacall of course, but more. Walter Brennan gives one of his most eccentric performances, and the Furthman screenplay is tightly-plotted and full of wisecracks. I particularly love an early sequence where an incompetent fisherman (and weak man) charters Bogart's boat, and we are privileged to observe Bogart's subdued but growing contempt for his unprofessional and incompetent employer. A superb example of Howard Hawks' skill in showing men at work.

The legend is that Hawks wagered William Faulkner that he could make a good film out of Hemingway's worst novel (or some such wager), and this was the chosen project. Hawks lets himself be guided in his task by the tested formula of _Casablanca_. There's Bogart; there's some dutiful wartime patriotism; and there's a boxed-in, stage-bound look to the re-creation of exotic Mozambique. However, there's also some fresh and spontaneous mischief, melodrama, and prurient interest.

While it's Casablanca-lite, it's still good in pretty much every way, though it doesn't get to the point of being mind blowing, even though I could watch Bogart do just about anything. Including fucking my sister. Did I say that out loud?

It's pretty alright, I guess, but I'm convinced its reputation as a quality film is due in no small part to the off-screen romance between the leads and the fact that it's reminiscent of Casablanca.

This is such an off colour little affair I almost feel sorry for it, but it charms its way further than its makings warrant. It's impossible to watch without seeing a rougher Casablanca, but that lends it a delightful innocence. I don't think that we will ever be able to recapture the mystery of the exotic and the unknown, and Bacall is a strange gem, unexpected and yet not diminished for it.

I think of this film as Casablanca-lite. It's got some chemistry, it's got some decent lines, it's got the political overtones and the stoic neutral protagonist with well-hidden sympathies for the underdog, but it just doesn't come together in that perfect amazing way that Casablanca does, and the screenplay's not quite good enough to let the actors shine.
