Summary: African-American drifter Danny Glover shows up at the LA doorstep of his old pal Paul Butler. In the spirit of auld lang syne, Butler takes Glover in, though his wife (Mary Alice) is not happy with this intrusion. She already has enough on her hands contending with her grown live-in son Richard Brooks and his real-estate agent wife Sheryl Lee Ralph... (All Movie Guide)

To Sleep With Anger seems to complete a transition into more dramatic storytelling, from Charles Burnett's earlier classic Killer of Sheep's looser structure and artiness. But there is something earthy, laid-back and simple that remains constant in Burnett's cinema even as it evolves. This is a film that thinks a little, feels a little, and smiles a little, and though it avoids any drastic conclusions, it perfectly succeeds to satisfy. Danny Glover does well in the atypical role of an asshole.

I definitely prefer Killer of Sheep and would recommend it to anyone looking to get into Burnett. Danny Glover gives a great performance and the film is certainly engaging, but I think KOS serves as a better introduction.

A slow-burn drama exploring the impact that an unexpected, insidious houseguest has on a family. Glover's devilish performance is wonderful, but to single him out is a disservice to the rest of the cast, all of whom are impressive. I enjoy Mary Alice in pretty much anything, even those godawful Matrix sequels. The writing is beautiful, never overplaying its hand and giving the actors some very well-drawn characters to work with. I wasn't exactly blown away by the film, but I really enjoyed it.
