Objective qualities aside, I have a hard time understanding how this movie was the recipient of numerous awards and acclaim. Yes, the acting and techinical aspects of the film are undoubtedly well done, the movie overall still lacks a certain punch and is all too reminiscent of those message movies Hollywood knows and loves so much. It's certainly not poor in any way, it's actually a good movie, just hard to call great by any means and certainly not classic.

A cool look at the drug traffic industry and how the "drug war" is fought. It's masterfully done and despite being quite long (and dealing with some pretty boring subject matter), it stays fresh throughout. In addition, I think it's very sad that the speech Topher Grace makes rings true.

Well acted and the cinematography and story construction help make it engaging for the most part. Unfortunately the film's urge to maintain even-handedness keeps this from saying anything other than "hey guys, drugs and prohibition sure are complex issues huh?", except without even scratching the surface. Overall not very satisfying.

Mexico is corrupt, the USA is mad, some slut becomes a junk whore and every other drug movie cliche you can possibly think of happens. But don't worry, it's wrapped up for you in a nice little package with a pretty pink ribbon so that you don't have to put forth any effort into thinking or formulating your own opinions. There. I just saved you two and a half hours of your time.

Seems to put its characters into one of two categories with respect to North America's drug problem: those that view it as a battle, and have no real intent of ending the greater war; and those forced to treat it as a problem that actually needs to be solved. Shall we defeat our enemies, or save our loved ones? Nice movie. A real and honest representation of our time and place.

A bit like a dramatised lecture, where unfortunately the naturalism of the dialogue is sacrificed for the benefit of speechifying and "the message". And the content of the lecture is not that interesting either.

Traffic is one of the most truthful films about the "war" on drugs, for which I give it credit. Soderbergh gives some of his best work here as a director, but the material itself, while never boring, isn't very engaging either. A solid effort.

Several complex stories focused on drugs and corruption converge from different angles. Benecio Del Toro was the prefect choice to play the honest mexican policemen fighting in the drug war. Catherine Zeta-Jones, starts as the innocent wife of a drug lord, but is steadily corrupted. Erika Christensen and Don Cheadle were also very good. Many memorable moments. Great cast, and good production. A few good action scenes but mostly full of dramatic acting.

The documentary style is a cliche. I've seen all the actors in a million other films - disbelief never suspended. And the acting wasn't very good. Didactic - was bored well within the 90 minutes watched. There's so much great art, and yet you want to preach to me about drug trafficking. I can't believe Bergman liked this.

Never really takes a stance on the central issue besides "things are kinda violent" but hindsight is 20/20 I guess. Also I get the contrasting yellow/blue effect but funny to think Soderbergh probably single-handedly upped the Yellowness of Mexico forever.

An above-average (but no more) social drama that is conventionally staged using the model of multiple storylines. However, it evolves quite unpredictably, albeit in a slow, unrewarding manner, as none of storylines reaches a satisfactory conclusion. Although preaching and moralizing are admirably avoided, "Traffic" ultimately leads nowhere and makes no point. The direction is superb though, as are the cinematography and editing, and there's solid if unexceptional work from the cast.

Masterful multi-character opus is a dramatic powerhouse thanks to its multi-faceted screenplay, cleverly comparing and contrasting various personalities involved in the U.S. drug trade (but never feeling the need to contrive a reason for any of these characters to meet). Eclectic, all-star cast fire on all cylinders, with father/daughter Douglas and Christensen standing out, but it is Soderbergh's ability to dive in head-first and keep all the balls in the air which is most notable.

TRAFFIC may make us feel dismal about the future, and it should. It's intent is not for us to shrug and throw up our hands in despair and write off the situation, but serves as a wake-up call. It calls for parents to wake up in their responsibilities to their children, in communities and school's to teach drug education, and in us as a country to persevere through seemingly insurmountable odds to make sure it doesn't hit us directly.

An ammbitious epic about the human cost of the rug trade spanning multiple story lines across US and Mexico. For the vast majority of the movie, the pacing and variety of the characters is done seamlessly and the more pointed political moments of dialogue are poignant rather than preachy. The acting is great (Del Toro is the highlight), it has an awesome ambient score, and some of the shots really hit their mark (the POV during the sex scene is ballsy as hell). Otherwise, it's pretty poor. The style is distractingly oversimplified (too much tint/shakey camera), the daughter's storyline has been done to death already (and done better), and it brings nothing new to the table and says nothing new. Decent at first but then it just drags on and on with no satisfaction.

For a film about cross-border drug trafficking, I was expecting more beheadings. This is certainly a decidedly pre-LiveLeak film, but it creates some compelling drama out of these three stories and interweaves them together respectively. Perhaps the story involving Michael Douglas and his daughter felt a little too D.A.R.E.-like, but it lead to a great ending and a great last line and a great last song.

Great direction and acting are the film's biggest standouts. With a huge cast and several interweaving stories a single weak link would make this falter, or at least make it hard to follow or maintain interest, so it's quite a feat that we always know what's going on even as several twists unravel. Despite its proficiency I found a distance between the film and myself that was hard to bridge, probably due to the lack of intimacy and my general disinterest in the subject of drug trafficking.

The cast looks nice on paper, but the acting is above average at best. Dennis Quaid has, what, ten lines? Not that I was itching for more Dennis Quaid...The style, especially the changing colors between locations, is kind of silly and even a bit amateurish, especially when Soderbergh doesn't even follow his own guidelines! I enjoyed sections of it, esp the Cheadle/Guzman team, but as a whole, it's lame. By the way, the three storylines don't intertwine, so stop saying you loved the intertwining.

Traffic is likely one of the better movies I've seen in this ensemble multi-story genre. The story lines for all the characters are great, but I'm not exactly sure if I like the characters because I actually like them or because I'm "supposed" to like them. Technically Soderbergh does some great tricks with this one, adding another really solid fill into his resume. Watch it.

Traffic arguably still remains as Steven Soderberghs most impressive and ambitious work to date. And to his credit all of the interweaving story lines are equally interesting. At no point does one plot thread seem to overtake another and there's no pecking order of importance. All round the performances are solid but Benicio Del Toro, Michael Douglas & Don Cheadle are the standouts. My only minor gripe is the unnecessary yellow and blue lighting tints that distinguish the different stories.

All of the interlocking stories are interesting, but for me the Michael Douglas one was the most interesting. I never really got why people liked Benicio Del Toro before this movie, but I kind of get it now. He was great. Don Cheadle was also excellent. I usually love ensemble casts and interweaving stories, but Soderbergh's Traffic is nothing more than a decent one. I didn't think the acting was amazing (Del Toro has had better performances). The story is ok, but nothing that will blow you away. I guess I don't get the hype that this film got, and I won't be surprised if this becomes less and less acclaimed as better films of this kind are made (and have been made since its release).

A surprisingly not condescending look at the global drug market - an excellent ensemble cast and great stylistic cinematography really push the film above the content's capabilities - I think Soderbergh directs it really well, letting the performances elevate it. The stories could all be separate films but the great pacing keeps you from getting bored or restless. Very enjoyable, and I've not rooted for a cop as much I have here with Del Toro's excellent performance.

This picture doesn't have much new to say about the USA's War On Some Drugs, but it says it very well, and does a fine job of telling a dramatic set of interlocking stories that highlights the sheer insanity of the situation

Enjoyable flick. The screenplay makes its points WAY to unsubtly for my taste, and while well-constructed, has the kind of broad writing that tactily encourages over-acting (Tomas Milian was particularly unable to resist the temptation). Which reminds me what an underrated actor Michael Douglas really is. Oscar-bait (the gritty version), and it should have successful--this is an infinitely better movie than what DID win that year.

I'm not always a huge fan of multiple perspectives in a movie, but this actually did it okay, although the heavy use of color wasn't my favorite choice.
