A prime example of how a terrible script can ruin a film no matter how good the cast, direction and production values are. Characters are underwritten and their motivations confusing, and the structure of the film is such that there is a general lack of suspense. Worst of all, the story just doesn't make much sense. The plot asks intriguing questions but can't be bothered to answer them. It's like attending a tech talk with a special speaker doesn't want to inform or convert the audience.

C'mon guys, this wasn't so bad! It is a little too bland and lackluster, but I thought that the premise and some of the ideas were really cool. I wish it had had the balls to go full brain-geek on the subjects of transhumanism and posthuman singularity.

The "villains" (luddites/govt) seem superfluous while the protagonists don't have a quantum fart of a personality between them. A story like Transcendence is either going to be a philosophical and potentially pretentious hard sci fi, or a CGI juggernaut. It's clear the people behind this were playing it safe between the two, hoping Depp's name recognition would cruise it to a soft landing. The reception would indicate he needs to go away and reinvent himself as someone who gives a shit again.

A magical computer frightens people with its awesome powers but ultimately suffers from a weakness identical to that of the aliens in WAR OF THE WORLDS (and INDEPENDENCE DAY). Does raise some legitimate questions, but in such an overblown and absurd manner that it undermines any serious intent. Despite some pretty shots there was only a minimum of visual imagination on display. HER, released six months earlier, makes this effort largely superfluous.

You know, there are actually some genuinely neat, imagination-stirring ideas here. But it's a very morally confused film. Namely the fact that Digital Johnny Depp never actually does anything bad the entire film - he heals people, wants to save the environment, and doesn't even kill any of the terrorists who attack him - yet is treated like the new Hitler. In fact, literally every bad thing that happens in the film is the fault of the group who I guess are supposed to be the "good guys."

It's technically a good looking movie, all the money is in screen. The plot is dumb as fuck though; a technology story by people that just want to roll out the same tropes. "We need to take every networked hard drive offline,Y2K" FUCK. OFF. Could have been so much better.

Wally Pfister surely knows his way around the camera. Transcendence is a cinematographic delight, featuring some cool set pieces. Sadly, the rest of the film is faulty from the script up. It contains interesting ideas, poses some interesting questions, but fails to tie them together into something that engages its audience. Some of the plot twists damage the internal logic and Pfister's direction isn't strong enough to elevate the idea to a worthy film. A shame.

SPOILER ALERT: The idea is good, and it definitely has some interesting points, but this is barely a horribly executed sci-fi thriller, but merely an underdeveloped love story. Actually everything is underdeveloped. The last 20-30 minutes, in particular, is horrible. Mara's character's decisions, the fact that the CIA sends only Murphy to sort out this global threatening situation, and Depp to suddenly rely on Bettany to choose whether or not to destroy himself... - Bad

It was pretty difficult to watch this movie. Firstly, it's got many actors that I really like: Freeman, Depp, Hauser, Murphy, and the always awesome Clifton Collins Jr. And I'm a big Sci-Fi buff, which usually makes me pretty forgiving. But, damn I judged it wrong. This was a mess, it's never riveting, the script sucks, and it bumbles along for too long to get to the meat, which really isn't interesting. It's not even that original, not when we had "The Lawnmower Man" twenty two years earlier.

Who classified this as Action or Suspense/Thriller? Bad calls there. Hearing complaints about the storytelling and "muddled" plot. Counter-point: If the movie took the time to fully flesh everything out, it'd be twice as long and you would be complaining about being bored. It's a movie that leaves you debating, thinking, with far more questions than answers. When done well, this is very effective. It's done very well here. See it, commit yourself to paying close attention, because it's worth it.

Well, as they say, that escalated quickly. It is not that the people behind 'Transcendence' were on to the wrong idea; they just chose the wrong format. This would make an excellent Sci-Fi series, with more characters, slower development and greater ambiguity towards the moral dilemmas facing the opposing sides.

Even the movie Her has a more logical understanding of how a higher intelligence will/would work. Why would a creation of such high intelligence do things/act in ways a normal human would do? This finally rises to the attention of USG, which responds with one cannon (really) to fire at its solar panels. Rebecca Hall and the rest of the cast are bored with the superintelligence in town, a reflection of Paglen/Pfister's complete lack of imagination and storytelling/directing skills.

There are flaws to this film and I probably would have preferred the action to be minimised more. BUT - there has never been a film that deals with our enigmatic and ambiguous relationship with technology so masterfully. Meticulous 'realism' about the feasibility of the technology and the behaviour of all the groups (military, FBI, terrorists etc.) were beyond the scope of such a film and would've taken away from the core ideas.

Sometimes ambitious messes capture something special and overcome their flaws, that's not the case here. There's a lot to like in the concept and the visuals in the second half, and the pretty strong performances, but these things don't fit together as well as they should. It doesn't help that the film is rather bloated.

Rebecca Hall is beautiful, poised and altogether marvelous. Johnny Depp quickly becomes overly reserved. An uneven balance of good and bad writing. Unevenly paced. Most of the cast was saddled with poor roles. Some of the special effects were good, but most were uninspired and overused. Music was good though frequently somber. It start off good, but the message gets confused and the ending is badly botched. This could easily have been a much better movie, it lost momentum and became stagnant.

This movie is the perfect example of many good ideas becoming a cluttered movie. This movie has its very high points, in terms of its cast and acting, yet the story is cluttered, incomplete, and often boring. The acting is phenomenal for the most part and the direction and cinematography fantastic, but it is not enough to keep up this poorly written, planned, paced, and thought out movie. Plods along in mediocre sci-fi territory for just long enough to make the wheel-spin head first into unbridled silliness completely jarring. The entire film suffers from bad writing, but I have to wonder if the cast and crew woke up one morning and read the scenes they were about to shoot for the first time and collectively just lost the will to go on. Consider this first, though: The film asks philosophical questions about what the soul is, what consciousness consists of and what it means to be human. It even seems to quietly wonder whether technology has replaced God. Or whether it ever can. It does all that, however, without ever really opening the conversation up to the reality of a God who utterly transcends humanity. (pluggedin.com)

There are an immense amount of problems with Transcendence. They begin at the first scene and carry out through the film. The storytelling method hampers any attempt at generating suspense. The plot itself is often confusing and leaves the characters undeveloped and with muddled motivations. The talented cast of actors get nothing much to do. But it's never boring. Is it worth seeing? I wanted to see this movie so much when I first heard about it. Christopher Nolan's cinematographer of choice Wally Pfister in my opinion made his films perfect visually. However, Transcendence never really knows what to say about technology, bouncing back and forth between a the-environment-would-be-better-without-it perspective and a people-would-be-more-social-without-it view. It has such a convoluted plot and flat characters that all of Pfister's visually amazing direction just gets lost.

You're invested in the story but a film like this hinges on its climax, and unfortunately the final act here just gets worse and worse. It continuously asks for more in depth thought from the audience, but when it is time to start delivering the poignant responses to said questions it cops out and becomes a traditional action flick. Depp does what he can with the source material, but not a single member of the cast really stood out and defined the film, and with a film of this nature you need some image to resonate.

Transcendence as expected is an attractive directorial debut from cinematographer Wally Pfister. There are many interesting ideas and they pose some interesting questions. But they are poorly strung together and don't build towards any kind of completion. Rebecca Hall & Paul Bettany both give solid performances but the films downfall is its weak script. There's no doubting Wally Pfister's technical abilities, but a story teller he is not and this arguably the biggest disappointment of 2014.

This film is actually a triangle drama about a wife who can't let go of his terminally ill husband and the husband's friend who conducts a crazy science experiment to preserve his husband "alive" in a form or another. When the motives of the "husband" are unknown he is seen as monstrous and is estranged from his wife. Pure fear of the unknown. All this small drama is disguised as a huge summer sci-fi blockbuster that is sold on the image of Johnny Depp. pay attention to the drama not spectacle.

Interesting idea but I'm not sure what the script wanted to do. A shame given the talent involved.
