So Yong Kim, who wrote and directed this film, gives us a powerfully moving snapshot of a chapter in two very young girls lives.Using an unobtrusive style she draws us into these kids world and show's us there perspective and how they face the pain of there mother leaving and there Aunt's inability to care for them properly. When they are shipped off to there Grandparents the Grandmother with a simple grace gets them to open up to the possibility of love and kindness.A great film that I loved.

"A work of tremendous poise and poignancy that assumes and articulates the perspective and emotional tenor of its two juvenile protagonists." - Nick Schager

Treeless Mountain observes the navigation of a learning curve by a kid twosome as they attempt to reconcile feelings of abandonment and disillusion through minor coping measures - childlike conduct in harshly adult circumstance - before sorrowfully considering more painful truth. In its portrait of childrens' lives lived sans parental influence, this suggests Nobody Knows - but where that film's imagery emphasizes powerful bleakness, TM hints at naive hopefulness, cheapening the visceral effect.

A grower; one that continued its effect long after the end. Humbly evocative of a certain time in life and the sense of detachment that comes close to being overwhelming.

An exceptionally beautiful and connected film, with a couple of amazing child performances; the director certainly knows her craft. Also, the mood of the movie was very real, the photography fantastic, and the world within felt like such a familiar one. "Treeless Mountain" is an exceptional tale of kids growing up vulnerable without roots. P.S: Grasshopper cruelty alert; sensitive viewers beware. Ah heck, watch it anyway.

I don't think I've ever seen a film that portrays a child's perspective of an adult world so well.
