Summary: France, 1936-37. The Popular Front wins elections, the Spanish Civil War begins, and Hitler and Stalin are manipulating and spying. The brilliant exile, Fiodor Voronin, a general at 20, is the deputy at the White Russian Military Union, probably slated to replace the aging Général Dobrinsky soon. Fiodor's Greek wife, Arsinoé, paints and stays away from politics, befriending Communist neighbors. Her health declines; the attentive Fiodor arranges care and, against the backdrop of Stalin's Great Purge, considers his options.(imdb)

"Rohmer's dialogues are in peak form, always building in their back-and-forth volleys to spine-tingling epiphanies." - Keith Uhlich

Entertaining, original, and somewhat thought-provoking, but nothing happens until the very end. Most of the movie feels pointless.

Interesting story set in peripheral locations but in some ways at the very centre of historical events (that will sweep all away). The lengthy dialogue scenes were always fascinating, with Rohmer's usual psychological acuity married to complex political discussion. It is perhaps strange, given the facts on which the film is based, to make the protagonist's wife essentially non-political (even though her position develops somewhat during the film): probably done to "assist" contemporary viewers.

A bit of a departure for Rohmer, putting his style into a period piece heavy on narrative and intrigue. It works out quite well, with the political drama leading the way and the various interpersonal relationships humanizing the characters providing the foundation. Rohmer's visual style matches the material, mixing simplicity with lushness. The dialogue is, of course, very good, but lacks that extra bit of spark I'd expect.
