You know, after watching the remake, this version is kinda cheesy and boring. The girl in this version doesn't hold a candle to Hailee Steinfeld and while John Wayne was pretty good (after all, he DID win the Oscar), I just think Jeff Bridges was much better. Sue me for hating on a classic.

For a movie called True Grit, it's not exactly the grittiest of westerns, but it is quite entertaining and has a number of fairly exciting moments (the last 15-20 minutes is where it shines). Also, I might just be a bad judge, but I didn't think Kim Darby was that bad. Granted, I haven't read the book, but she was feisty, headstrong, and had some great lines. Glenn Campbell, on the other hand, was just plain awful.

Very similar to the Coens' remake. It lifts a lot of the same good dialogue from Portis' novel. However, it is, of course, less stylishly made. The cast is good but never great. Watch the remake first, and try to avoid catching one shortly after the other.

I liked it well enough. The Duke was a good Rooster, obviously a great choice in those days. Not Oscar worthy though. Loses points for the rather awful portrayal of Mattie Ross, too soft. Probably the worst parts of the film are when they try to interject dialogue lifted from Mattie Ross' inner dialouge in the book, it just doesn't fit.

More elaborate and considerably better than the Coen Brothers remake of the same book. Still, I wouldn't recommend it to non-genre-fans. It's implausible and has all the generic trappings. John Wayne is a "teddy bear" here, as one reviewer described it, despite the attempted pirate look. Glen Campbell's acting is nothing to write home about either.

Kim Darby's acting isn't great, but her character & relationship with Wayne's character make this a lot more interesting than your average western, at least for me. Don't get distracted by expectations; despite the Oscar & top billing, Wayne's the supporting character here.

The original TRUE GRIT boasts one thing neither the remake nor any film of the last 35 years can: the presence of John Wayne. And if Rooster Cogburn isn't quite Wayne's best performance (it didn't deserve the Oscar he got for it), he still has a great time with it. But Kim Darby makes for a shrill Mattie, and Glen Campbell for a dopey LaBoeuf. And the film as a whole is generally played too light, too safe (and drags because of it); tellingly, it earned a G rating. Best for devotees of the Duke.

It's easy to see with hindsight why The Coens remade this - this is a devilish, sly, subversive little script that packs a whallop. Mattie Ross' acting doesn't quite match her character's motivation and conviction, but each character is extremely memorable regardless (especially Duvall, whose enigma-type reminds strongly of Ed Harris). The plot's loss of innocence dynamic is pleasantly troubling, as G-rated westerns go.

Wayne is very good, but as a whole there are much better Western's out there that this. Watching "True Grit" you mainly get the feeling that there is a lot of wasted potential here and it doesn't quite make the most of all its components.

All around great western with an award winning performance from the Duke and a nice appearance from Robert Duvall. Dennis Hopper has a brief but memorable part too. The true highlight of True Grit is the wonderful outdoor locations and photography, specifically the location in the denouement.

One of John Wayne's best westerns. He brings Rooster Cogburn to life. His chemistry with Kim Darby is astounding. This is one of the all time classics of American Cinema, not just the Western Genre. The only thing I can say negative about this movie is that Glen Campbell's performance isn't as strong as Wayne and Darby's. Either way, you must seee this movie!
