Impeccably acted and expertly directed, True Grit is an excellent movie through and through. A mix between the quirky eccentric style of Coens and a throwback to the older classics, the movie seizes the attention quite well despite its obviously linear structure. Bridges owns the show while the newcomer Steinfeld delivers an unflinching performance.
An entertaining adventure film with some amazing cinematography and great acting performances by Bridges and Steinfeld, but that's about it. It was far more straightforward than I expected it to be and I thought it lacked the depth and ambiguities you'd expect to find in a Coen Brothers film. Having seen the 1969 version not so long ago, it's impossible not to compare - I liked them both, but I think I prefer the more light-hearted earlier film.
Great acting and gorgeous cinematography, but the score is absolutely awful, the film drags at the end, and the whole thing feels way too Hollywood for a Coen picture.
Good dialogue, outstanding acting, fun story and ofcourse good directing. Sometimes funny too. However the smart talk of Steinfield got sometimes a bit annoying.
Very atmospheric. I kinda love how this movie seems to avoid having some sort of point. I mean, not much happened, but you could really enjoy and get to know these characters. Then the ending tied it all together perfectly.
Fucking excellent. I like the 1969 version, but even though they mostly stuck to the same story and even the same dialogue, the Coens come up with something far more subtle, grim and ultimately real. Not the best they've done in recent years, but much like in No Country For Old Men, they take someone else's story, stay true to it, and still somehow make it their own. And Hailee Steinfeld is the second-best teenage western heroine I've seen this year after Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone.
Pure awesomeness! Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are good, but young Hailee Steinfeld stole the show in my eyes. She has a bright Hollywood-future if she decides to keep on acting.
This is no surprise that this is another outstanding film directed by the Coen Brothers'. Hailee Steinfeld deserves to be nominated for an Oscar, she is outstanding. Jeff Bridges is excellent in his role. Even if you are not a Coen Brothers' fans still check out this film.
Like "Night in the Hunter," this is a modern fairy tale that remains true to the Grimm reality of the primitive imagination. Damon isn't that hot, but he's light years better than Glenn Campbell, and Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges (much better thanDarby and Wayne!) are simply wonderful.
"True Grit" is quite similar to "Unforgiven" in that they are both instant classic Westerns that are completely driven by excellent performances instead of action set-pieces or other cliches of the genre. While still feeling like a Coen brothers film, it's definitely their most straightforward to date. Bridges and Steinfeld have perfect chemistry and are definite highlights. By far the best Western in recent years, although not as perfect as I was expecting. Use subtitles.
A very powerful remake from the Coen Bros. This is one of the few times I've seen Jeff Bridges completely disappear into a role, and Hailee Steinfeld totally deserved the Best Supporting Actress nomination she got, pulling a ton of weight, particularly for a child actor (which are usually pet peeves of mine). Throw in some typical Coen Bros. wacky/random humor (the man in the bear suit comes to mind, as do several of Bridges' snappy one-liners), and you've got yourself a winning western.
