One of the most early '90s films I've seen. It reeks of quirkiness throughout and suffers slightly from a stilted presence, yet from the get-go this film is still very well written and acted within its own parameters and emotionally engaging. It's story of how these two characters come together is original and ingenious, showing us a new definition of love.

Gets extra significance for being filmed (and taking place) less than a mile down the road from where I grew up, as I was growing up.

Fist thing that stands out is the odd stilted delivery. That said, I did get used to it in the second half and there's plenty in the film to enjoy and make it worthwhile. The characters are very sympathetic, with a humanity that counteracted the artificiality of the delivery. The way those characters are tied to the film's blunt, but well executed, theme of trust made the whole thing a rewarding experience. Feels like something I may like much more on second viewing when I know what to expect.

Trust is a riveting, somewhat absurdist dark comedy that effectively alternates melodrama with snappy, peculiarly honest dialogue. Adrienne Shelly and Martin Donovan are both superb.

I did like this for the most part, but there were times when the quirkiness crossed the line from charming to eye-rolling self-parody. His violent, misunderstood genius is such blatant nerd wish-fulfillment, and she sleeps on the fucking floor. The acting usually compensates but sometimes it's just too much. Edie Falco is my favourite part even though she only has one really great scene and then is pretty much wasted for the rest of the movie.

Some questionable moments but mostly interesting, even if subsequent films by this filmmaker seemed to show he was following a bit of a formula.

Pretty funny indie drama. Has the same feel as Clerks or Slacker.

When will I ever learn? Quirky almost never works for me, and the tone of this film rubbed me in a particularly wrong way. On top of that the film's disgusting characters made for rather uncomfortable viewing. An annoying let-down.

Certainly offers some deadpan amusement by having everyone act kind of off-the-wall, but not really that fascinating after a while.

I like me a good offbeat romance between two losers in life but I sorta had a hard time getting into the rhythms of its dialogue to be that sold on all the characters. Loved Martin Donovan in this

On one hand this movie is honest with real emotion and humor. On the other hand its tedious and cold. Everyone does well with the stilted dialogue, but the stilted dialogue doesn't do the movie itself any favors. Ultimately it's the ending that manages to save things. By then Donovan and Shelly really start to work as the leads. It feels a little bit like a missed opportunity for a truly great film.

Really fantastic. I love Adrienne Shelly and Martin Donovan's performance is also amazing. Really, they all are. Hall Hartley is an amazing director. I place this one on par with The Unbelievable Truth. It has the same beautiful solemnity. An amazing film. Watch it.

Really good, interesting and funny stuff here. It's a lot like Woody Allen's stuff before it became preoccupied with itself. This film also takes the traditional screenplay and its conventions, and, while it doesn't exactly stand them on their heads, it certainly does skew them.

Both hilarious and sad, it's a rather strange movie, which sometimes confused me with it's tone, but in the end I absolutely loved it, and though it's great at both, it's certainly more drama, than it is comedy. The characters are great, the casting is spot on, the vibe is strange but rewarding... – fantastic movie overall.

A really good film, even while some core aspects of it I can't relate to. It's funny, I think sometimes this is the kind of dialogue that plays in my own head, and watching this just makes me feel a little self-conscious.

Hal Hartley's universe of damaged people and almost banal conversations loaded with meaning is a fascinating and involving one. He seems to bring out the best in Martin Donovan, whose performances are Hartley movies are all outstanding. Adrienne Shelly--may she rest in peace--is also fantastic. Terrible synthesized soundtrack....Hal, really--get better people for that (although, "Mess with Me" by The Great Outdoors was a great choice). Overall, wonderful movie.

I remember seeing this film on the IFC channel many years ago and it really struck a chord with me. It had small bits of dark humor mixed in with the seriousness of this movie that kept it very interesting. I loved how you would always see minor characters in a group setting. Well acted movie as Adrienne Shelly(RIP) was awesome as was Martin Donovan. Can't understand why Donovan can't get more roles. Really a great and enjoyable movie.

God bless Hal Hartley. Maybe the closest any movie has gotten to being pure music, rather than musical.

On par with the quirky humor of Wes Anderson (who has better compositions during the slower parts) but with weightier themes. A little hard to feel sympathy for such despicable characters, yet their interactions spice things up. Favorite scene: the 50+ people needing TV repairs.

An unheralded masterpiece. Donovan and Shelly both are both superb, as are the phenomenal supporting cast and Hartley's deft direction.

Adrienne Shelly was cute & interesting as the young pregnant girl in this offbeat dark comedy. Her mother was just awful. Uneven performances throughout. She meets an emotionally damaged man (Martin Donovan) victimized by his father. From their common circumstances they share a bond of makes them stronger. He tries to control his volatility in order to have a relationship with her. Terrible music. The ending was not very satisfying. Sometimes annoying, but also quirky & different.

The sharp writing and strong lead performances make this eminently watchable. I appreciate the way Hartley humanizes these misfits while remaining true to their outsider status.
