This could have been very bad, very easily but it manages to avoid a lot of obvious pitfalls while giving on interesting slant on the scenario.

I'm always wary of these cautionary-tales-for-teens type movies, but this one is actually pretty good. There's some depth to it.

A Lifetime network movie, basically. Stuck with it simply because Keener and Owen being in it made me think the ending would pack a punch but it didn't. An incredibly simple film about what is becoming a tired subject. Liberato turns in a good, albeit annoying, performance, as does Owen and, of course, Keener, per usual. Schwimmer must have called in some favors because this film didn't deserve any of these actors.

Good. I read a lot of reviews about this criticizing the "ham-fisted"
approach of the director. Well, considering the subject I doubt Mr Schwimmer could have done a better job showing the truth in all its horribly ugly decay. It could've been done better but most of the time decent is good enough. The victim and the predator deliver excellent performances. Mr Schwimmer has matured as a director surprisingly well. A good eye opener. Recommended.

Not great in a lot of ways (notably the depiction of the internet and the way teenagers talk being as off as they usually are in films made by people over 40), but I do respect David Schwimmer using his clout to tackle very difficult material. Liana Liberato's performance is very good.

A heart wrenching and powerful look at how one family is affected by the sexual assault of there teenage daughter by an online predator. The acting is very realistic and low key into the dam bursts, then it's gut wrenching to watch as they fall apart and then try to come to terms with what happened.

This is something that is going on in the real world and Schwimmer deals with it in a realistic way and avoids the melodramatic speed bumps and also points a finger towards the sexoffender-online thing. Trust balances on a fine line between what the naive young girl believe and what the world around her believe... I could have done without the symbolic commercial posters of teens not wearing any clothes from the fathers company. A decent film on a horrible subject...

Despite the fact that this film takes the subject of online predation seriously and that I ended up thinking about things I hadn't considered before, most of the juicy stuff was presented as facts in a presentation, and was not dramatized. Clive Owen, on the other hand, playing the father, chewed the scenery. I thought the on-screen chats effectively conveyed the emotional state and maturation level, and thus vulnerability, of the young female lead, something her performance didn't do so well.

So far I've watched two movies this year about sexual predators (Megan Is Missing as well). If I keep this up, the FBI will get the wrong idea. But in all seriousness... like someone else, the onscreen chatting text was lame as hell. Luckily, the rest of the movie is completely solid. Emotional, it looks at something that can't be looked at enough, and it all comes together well.

A pitch-black film about a happy family that is ripped apart when their daughter meets a paedophile. Not that much of an elaborate story, but direction and acting are amazing - as are some of the songs. The inevitable downfall of a family can be traced to one single moment... and the one time you think everything may be all right after all, you're hit with a sledgehammer.

What starts off as a big-budget movie of the week is lifted by solid performances, and a third act which doesn't wrap everything up neatly. The references to the sexualization of our culture by the ad industry are worth making too.

Schwimmer tackles the subject with a critical eye but as the focus shifted from the protagonist to her revenge seeking dad, most of the momentum that has been built plummets rather abruptly, inciting a few laughs along the way.

I found this film very unsettling, particularly the inevitability of the opening, and thought that the film's distant tone was very effective in conveying the bleakness of its central tragedy. I also found the second half insightful, as both the authorities and the family focus on the crime and justice rather than the victim, and how the stigma of the crime is passed onto the victim through our perception of the wrong perpetrated against them.

Schwimmer achieves an unpleasant, maybe too naive sometimes, but compelling and courageous teen drama. And he doesn't try to watch anything from a distant point of view: instead, the director shoots in a quiet disturbing and intimate way.
