Accused of racism a fair amount, but is really just nihilistic and cynical as hell. Very well done, though, and Lancaster tears it up in a role I'd never have expected him to pull off.

A fascinating if flawed film. Extremely racist in its sentiments towards the antagonists (who go out and prove that racism - and ingrain it in the young colonel character). But conversely, it's also an extremely adept and technically proficient work, with a great sense of danger and realism. It's too bad the music is horribly abrasive.

Highly watchable and (nowadays) very politically incorrect Western

Robert Aldrich Western starring Burt Lancaster as a guide who counsels a greenhorn Calvary Lieutenant in a chess-match with an Apache warlord named Ulzana. Both sides are depicted as savage and uncomprehending of the other, and a parallel to the Vietnam War wouldn't be off-base. Lancaster is quite good.
