In this slowburning mystery Shyamalan once more (and never since) showed exceptional vision. It's writing-, staging- and acting-masterclass, with Willis giving what's arguably his best dramatic performance. Conceptually and thematically strong, occasionally funny and beautifully executed in every way, this is a gem that I continue to love. My favorite superhero movie.

Shyamalan's best film. Starts slow but it lets the characters develop nicely and despite the lame comic book premise, I really liked it. I can't think of a more believable actor to be a superhero either. Willis is the man.

This will probably be better upon rewatch value, because I was expecting a different kind of movie. It's still a decent drama with some fairly beautiful cinematography and great acting and snippets of M. Night Shayamalan when he was in his prime, and an effective twist. I'm surprised to watch something of his that isn't too silly or just terrible, and with some great shots. Edit - Seen it twice now and it has really grown on me. It's a tad slow but really well acted and executed.

One of my favourite films! From the first minute the movie is really intruiging and it immediatelly grabbs the attention. The story is very well built and it's done in some special comic-like style. In that way it's even more special, and interesting for us to follow. Shyamalan shows us, again, he's a great director

this movie is great. it has the misfortune of working better in the context of a glut of inhuman, machine-generated superhero movies, as opposed to mostly on its own when it came out in 2000. proof that whatever happened to Shyamalan in the mid 00s, there was at least one point where he wasn't a fluke. also: that freeze frame text MUST have been studio mandated, right?

M. Night Shyamalan's best (a phrase which gradually means less and less), as he actually turns superhero genre material into a real human story. It's surprisingly slow and low-key, relying on Willis's exploration of his own abilities more than any real climatic scenes. Ending is a bit out there, but it kind of works.

People tend to dump on M. Night Shyamalan just because every movie of his isn't exactly like The Sixth Sense. I dare say Unbreakable is Shyamalan's best movie. It's a great spin on the comic book story, with some truly suspenseful turns along the way. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are great together (and on their own). It's a long, slow burn, but give this one a chance.

Shyamalan succeeds in creating superhero noir by taking obvious inspiration from writers such as Alan Moore and framing it in Alex Ross style graphic novel depictions of the real world. At the end of the day it's still a father and son story but more about a man's own emotional insecurity and guilt complex while remaining true to the medium it's based on. Probably the best contemporary deconstruction of the super hero genre that we will see for some time.

I never really gave this movie a chance when it came out. It's actually quite good. I mean parts aren't that great, but it was really trying something different so I'll cut it a lot of slack. Now, the text at the very end was so uncalled for and out of place that it comes close to ruining the ending. I mean, off the top of my head it's the worst exposition type text... well, ever. If we absolutely HAD to know that information we could have had a 10 second scene showing it. Blarg.

Along with X-Men, this was an early aughts movie that legitimized super heroes. It dramatically explores a man's psychology, marriage, and purpose after learning of his abilities. He isn't yelling "WooHoo!" while using his powers for the first time. However, it's a Shamalan film; which means a heavy dose of 50's Americana via a Twilight Zone feel & appreciation of postwar comic books. Still, the silly freeze frame text doesn't nail the ending, so while I dug it, I've never watched the sequels.

M. Night Shyamalan will never make a better movie. Yes, there is a twist here but even if you know it the movie still works really well because it's an affective character study of a man on his way to great things. However, there are a few plot holes/questions concerning the whole thing, but it's best to not think about them because it's not that important. The score, especially song titled Unbreakable is astounding.

If there's one thing about this movie I love it's the tone. Shyamalan has, or had, the ability to set an unsettling tone which perfectly suits his movies. Bruce Willis is fantastic and Samuel L. Jackson plays a character beyond Samuel L. Jackson and he's good at it too! Well worth seeing. Even though Shyamalan has a very negative reputation now this film was before his rapid decline.

A nearly perfect movie by M. Night and quite possibly one of his most underrated. Samuel is a master actor forget a-list or b-list he is on another plane of acting and can't be touched. Bruce Willis always makes you feel like you are right there in the movie. He gives off the essence of being a regular joe like the rest of us, always being planted in unusual situations.. M bends the comic book hero genre and gives it a face lift. You either love this one or hate it.

Shyamalan's encore to The Sixth Sense, a hard act to follow. Given license by his previous success, he again stakes out an unusual area in commercial cinema: moody, bordered on four sides by gloomy, grave, somber, and morose. The plotline, please understand, is as silly as can be, yet Shyamalan betrays no awareness of, much less awkwardness or embarrassment over, any silliness. And in truth, the grip of the movie depends far less on narrative propulsion than on atmospheric muck.

Unbreakable had a tough act to follow due to the success of M. Night Shyamalan's breakthrough film 'The Sixth Sense'. But this is another solid piece of filmmaking from Shyamalan and I think it's somewhat underrated. Bruce Willis collaborates with Shyamalan brilliantly once again and Samuel L. Jackson is as equally impressive. The concept alone is genius. From the innitial premise through to the surprising finale, this is a satisfying, refreshing and original take on the Superhero formulae.

Nolan is often blamed for kickstarting the modern trend of overly serious genre films, but it's Shyamalan who has a real knack for taking silly concepts and treating them with the utmost seriousness. His cinema is the place where solemnity and stupidity meet and become mutually reinforcing. With Unbreakable he tries hard to create a moody mystery about a superman's journey of self discovery, but his technical skill can't disguise that it's adolescent material with delusions of grandeur.

What if comic books were based, at least in some part, in reality? That's the premise explored here and done so in a really understated way. It's a very grounded portrayal of superheroes. The slowness of the movie helps it, but also at times drags out scenes that aren't really necessary to drag out. Overall though, I thought it was well done and a look at super powers in a very down to earth way.

Interesting. Unbreakable is an intentionally unsubtle movie about a medium that's not exactly heralded for its subtlety -- comic books. Shyamalan, by juxtaposing the black and white simplicity of comic books with the grayscale complexity of real life, almost but not quite manages to touch on some deeper issues about good and evil. In any case, Unbreakable is an enjoyable film.

My knowledge of life and writing has changed. If you'd never been sick literally everyone in your life would tell you. I.E. you would already know you were different. Likewise, if you were always stronger than everyone else. The long-duration camera shots and comic book color splashes are still excellent.

The resolution is arguably arbitrary, but it doesn't matter all that much in the big scheme of things, and the entire movie is very satisfying and well-made - its themes perhaps fall short of being truly profound, but they are very compelling and entertaining nonetheless, and it's hard to fault a movie for not breaking through a glass ceiling (no pun intended). It's a breath of fresh air in the superhero genre, and might be Shyamalan's best movie.

(2nd viewing) The 1st act is pretty much a masterclass in filmmaking. It's so good, it makes you wonder if Shyamalan started buying too much into his own hype or just sold his soul to the Church of Scientology during the making of Signs. This is Shyamalan's best film, in my opinion. The film is a smoldering super hero film that simmers until it boils over and doesn't over-sell its surprises. I'm really not a big fan of the later franchise that Shyamalan tried to launch off this film (which often feels like a cash grab attempt at saving a declining career,) because the best parts of Unbreakable are that it isn't over-the-top and outlandish and carries a thematic weight, which makes the super hero stuff work so much better.
