Has all the energy and wit you'd expect from Sturges, only with darker themes. It didn't bust my gut, but it's very amusing and the dialogue is basically perfect. "I seriously doubt you used to play Russian Roulette all the time with your father!"

A bit underwhelmed by this one. The concept is fabulous and the dialogue is sharp, but the slapstick is horrendous.

Darker than I had expected from a 40s film, but in a good way. Funny & witty, with sharp dialogue and a great performance from Rex Harrison.

Love the fantasy sequences, and the satire of the egotistical artist is very funny. Also love the music. Great dialogue and verbal comedy, but the slapstick falls flat.

Very enjoyable, albeit dark, comedy from Sturges. As far as the actors go, Harrison is the key cog here, and he performs his role of the suspicious gentleman extremely well. The dialogue is filled with subtle comic moments that fly by almost quicker than you can catch them, and the centerpiece sequence as Harrison's character attempts to deal with his wife is wonderfully suspenseful and laugh out loud funny.

Wonderfully dark, with a really creative structure. Never thought I'd see Rex Harrison doing slapstick.

A very dark comedy that plays out very well. The performances are great and the central daydreams work really well at conveying the different aspects of love. The ending is very nicely executed.

Sturges's patented pungent dialogue is in place and it's a thrill to watch Rex Harrison deliver it with rapidly articulate diction that makes every line another devastating swing with a well-sharpened rapier. There's also an especially nice supporting turn by Barbara Lawrence, who continually deflates her stuffy dullard of a husband with sardonic precision. There are wonderful intricacies in the plotting and in the details. Sturges brings some of that care to his visual senses, as well.

Very entertaining. The idea is brilliant and so is the dialogue and the delivery, as one would expect from Sturges. The slapstick is useless, though, but nevermind that.

Seems to be considered one of the lesser Preston Sturges films, but so far it's my favorite. Rex Harrison and Linda Darnell are both dynamite, and the movie is really funny throughout, especially the contrast between fantasy and reality. On top of that, the music is excellent and it's got quite a sweet ending.
