Summary: By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.
A beautifully touching film at times. Balancing genuine emotion and slapstick entertainment over some stunning visuals is no easy task. Pixar prove to have the people that can come closest to pulling that kind of thing off. Whether they take you somewhere outside yourself for a fraction of time is really a person to person thing. Nevertheless, highly recommended for kids...
All this deflated cinema and Pixarism mischaracterizes what good animation can be (as in Coraline, Monster House, Chicken Little, Teacher's Pet, The Iron Giant). Up's aesthetic failure stems from its emotional letdown.
Disney & Pixar have done it once again with another touching and heart-warming family film with a great storyline and likeable characters. Its great watching Mr. Fredricksen and Russell set off on their journey to South America, and finding friends and more adventures along the way. The talking dogs were a tad odd, especially when they were flying planes, but this was a great film that was very enjoyable to watch. Its not the best Disney/Pixar film, but its certainly up there with the best :)
What works are the simple but wondrous things, which many fantasies can often lose sight over. This loses itself though with the final confrontations which drops simple for action. Still it does come back to the simple things again in the end.
As though Pixar became more and more expectable over recent years, they still manage to truly surprise the audiance in at least one moment per movie. The scene where the house flew was one of those moments.
