Refreshing, honest, and real, this film was a wonderful break from the chaos of the holiday season. Clooney and Farmiga have wonderful chemistry, and Anna Kendrick really blooms in one of her first big roles. Bitingly funny, this is a good choice for fans of the director (Juno, Thank You For Smoking).

Second 2009 movie after Funny People to forsake a compelling first half to drive home the importance of holding middlebrow bourgeois values -- family stability home, blah blah blah -- by making Bingham's inevitable late-game epiphany arrive tragically too late, essentially punishing him for his departure from a more traditional lifestyle. Typically slick direction from Reitman tends to neutralize the emotional weight.

It's hard for me to pinpoint every reason why I loved this film, perhaps because its range in emotions was as refreshing and profound as Clooney's performance. All I know is this one's a keeper.

Not quite the film of the year I was hoping for after hearing the hype and seeing Reitman's and Clooney's names attached to it. This is most definitely a good film even if it tries too hard to deliver an emotional punch with montage after montage of people being fired. The film tends to plod in areas with no real conflict but overall this is a fine movie about living with your choices and what to expect out of life.

potentially sticky existential questions & acidic satire reduced to a bunch of sledgehammer extended metaphors and a telegraphed narrative arc which only serves up safe, moralistic answers. oh, and jason reitman's still trying to be glib and painful at the same time.

Thank god they didn't go "Blue pill" with this movie, written like a piece of great theater should be. When you leave you'll be thinking new thoughts, perhaps thoughts that hadn't occurred to you before. Maybe some you don't particularly care for, which is good too. Although, if you're adverse to introspection and thought . . .

This is the film that shows Reitman is a filmmaker to watch and already better than his father in many ways. Thank You for Smoking and Juno are both very good movies, but Up in the Air is the most pertinent and timely. It also creates a character in Ryan Bingham who is in turns charming and horrible. Clooney's performance largely makes the film and although it isn't the best of the year, it is worth seeing.

It's good. Very good actually. But some things just didn't work for me - I loved for example the 'being alone' theme, but I think they involved love just a bit too much in all that, but it was, I guess, inevitable. Pretty good acting should also be mentioned.

It's a well-made film -- well-shot and well-acted and all that. The message is clear but it doesn't beat you over the head with it. However, it's very much a Hollywood film, and it's sheen is far too bright for its subject matter. And for me, this detracts from the film a good bit. Oh, one more thing: Vera Farmiga looks perfect naked. Hubba hubba, yowzers, etc.

The first half of this is right up there with Thank You For Smoking but the protracted wedding scene midway through acts as a turning point: the movie losing much of its sly humour and witty dialogue, replaced with a disjointed - and somewhat predictable - final hour. Its like it wants to be serious but doesn't know where to put its energy. Good cast all round: even Clooney being Clooney works well here. I never knew Young MC had got so fat.

Not bad, sort of a modernized version of The Accidental Tourist. It's not brilliant, but it's not stupid either. The film traffics in somewhat trite Cameron Crowe-isms, but is significantly buoyed by George Clooney's endless buckets of charm. As for the two nominated supporting actresses... Vera Farmiga is pretty good. Maybe not that noteworthy, but decent. However, I really didn't care for Anna Kendrick that much. She struck me as a poor man's Amy Adams, and I don't like Amy Adams.

In a word: assured. A second springs to mind: effortless. Substance is kind of snuck into the perfectly structured script yet doesn't get bogged down by the light-weight humorous elements. Clooney is great. Reitman almost blows it ("Welcome to the family", my a**) but all is forgiven by the, at best, bittersweet ending. His movies have a tendency to seem great while you are watching them to then fade in your memory, perhaps because his main talent is observing small details. A third word: Funny.

The ending is kind of a backpedal -- this is a Hollywood film starring George Clooney, after all, and he doesn't come cheap -- but until that point this is a damn near perfect comedy for misanthropic loners. I can't remember the last time I laughed this often and this loudly

First, a confession: Jason Reitman and his father are two of my favourite directors. Like his other films, this is a film with a strong message. The trouble is, I liked the character of Alex so much that I felt as if I had been dumped just like Clooney's character, and just like all those laid-off employees. I'm sure that's just how the viewer was meant to feel. Still, a downer is a downer. You have been warned.

Reitman is especially good at balancing the often delicate tone of the movie, which slaloms between bittersweet comedy and piercing studies in the way disappointment descends. It's a film thrillingly about adults. It's about the vast array of choices that are laid before a life, and the compromises that result when there are only so many departing flights that you can get on. There are no easy answers, just fumbling attempts at getting things right followed by fleeting moments of reward.

The absolute perfect dramedy, and a serious contender for the best flick of 09. The range of emotions that Reitman was able to capture was incredible; it'll have you grinning from ear to ear, to sucking the soul right out of you. It's crushing and it's saturated with morality. Crafted for the social status of 2009, it's a perfect way to cap off the year. This one is truly something.

I hated this from the poorly made Dallas-intro, through-out the slick-voice-over-about-shady-business crap, aided by a "The Graduate light" soundtrack. Clooney - whilst okay - doesn't reach his Solaris high. Kendrick is piss annoying, especially in one excruciatingly poorly acted break-down scene. The plot is retarded with its TERMINATOR concept, and the "people who fire you are lonely losers" pad on the back for the American blue collar is just plain dumb. Sub-par indie-rom-com-drama. Avoid.
