As is often the case for me, the success of an anthology movie hinges upon it's ability to convincingly tie the individual stories together, if this cannot be done, then each story needs to be independently good."V/H/S" doesn't really fit either of those criteria, but a couple of these stories might have been better off as features.

Good, but the version I saw was one of those pirated copies where the guy snuck a camera into the theater. That lessened the quality, but then also, he would occasionally pick the camera up and pan around the theater until eventually somebody stabbed him.

A merge of two horror sub-genres - horror anthology and "found footage" - that I think worked fairly well. If you enjoy this one, a sequel is on the way (S-V/H/S). Depending on the success of this new franchise, maybe Asylum will produce "Betamax" in the near future.

As a fan of the found footage subgenre, I had a pretty good time with this. It's not scary, but effectively creepy at times. Some creative ways around the 'why are they holding the camera all the time?' issue, and a few of the shorts have decent twists.

Not nearly as good as I had hoped. As with a lot of anthologies some of the stories feel a little too rushed and some of them just aren't very suspenseful or scary. A couple segments (killer in the forest, haunted house) are astounding, whereas the creepy girl segment is okay and the roadtrip and skype ones are better in theory than execution. I liked it but I'd never say I loved it, some cool ideas and one of the better found footage movies for sure.

Some quite promising horror auteurs get together to make an anthology film. Little did they know what... You know the rest. I want to like this, some of the installments ("Amateur Night" especially) are quite indecent, and I love that it goes all out, keeping it simple and old-school. These guys take their horror serously. But it's overlong, while not taking time to use its ideas; it comes across more like sketches of horror movies they'd like to make someday if they could be bothered.

Wicked fun. Legitimately scary (particularly Ti West's bit), unfailingly entertaining (except for the third one, which is weak all around), and surprisingly original (especially that Skype episode, which is about...aliens? ghosts? what?) and altogether one of the best times I've had with a movie this year. Gives the horror genre a breath of fresh air.

It's a much more visceral version of the Blair Witches and Paranormals, and certainly works. The issue is that so few of the characters are likable, you essentially find yourself rooting against virtually everyone...

An intriguing look into found-footage films, in the style of a horror anthology (seriously, we need more of these). There is a weak section or two, but overall it is amazing at how well the shorts (by several different directors) gel together. Not my favorite film by any means, but one that will have you thinking well past when the film ends.

The fourth and final segments are the best, with the first coming very close. Third has an interesting conceit, but it's left wanting in the execution, and the second just felt largely bland relative to the rest. The frame creates a creepy atmosphere, but it isn't on the same level as most of the actual shorts. Also, while it's not out of place, the dialogue gets hard to hear at points, which can be a bother. But overall, it's fun, and it ends strong enough to leave a good impression.

V/H/S is one of my favourite found footage films. The shorts manage to be creepy and interesting and even in those I'm not that of a fan can be found good. My favourite short films are the first, the third and the fourth one. One particular thing I don't like is that the frame narrative feels sorta week. That said though it is still a great film.

While one or two of the segments are interesting, there doesn't seem to be much of a narrative thread going on to engage beyond the self-contained pieces. Those, unfortunately, are generally quite poor in quality and fail to justify the time spent watching this anthology.

And I thought Paranormal Activity was boring! This is just a collection of amateurish, cliched and supposed-to-be-scary videos. It's quite an achievement if a film can make me feel bored even though there is a hot vampire chick devouring people on the screen.

It feels weird saying I "enjoyed" a film this nauseating and harrowing to actually watch, but it more than achieved what it set out to do. It took me quite a while to adjust and get into the film's mindset, so much so that I actually felt physically ill at the shaky-cam and VHS "tracking lines" and other artifacts. But when it hit its stride it definitely paid off.

A decent little anthology of found-footage horror tales. 3/5 of the shorts are actually pretty cool, so 60 seems like a fair rating. (For those keeping score at home: the first, second and fifth stories were the good ones, and the first one was the best. The third and fourth were pretty forgettable). Fair warning: nearly two hours of shaky cam may cause motion sickness.

As a film it is plotless and weak. As an anthology it makes more sense, but the amateurism in the acting, effects & occasionally the directing shines through. By the end I was sick of pre-emptive music, vhs artefacts & had pretty much lost all immersion. Lucky they got the highlight out of the way early.

This is the epitome of a horror movie that really breaks a mold and runs with it. It had me guessing until the end on what was going to happen, and with each film, it just seemed to get crazier. It was scary, subtle, and one of those movies where it just sticks with you days later.

The collections got scarier and scarier, but still weren't as truly horrifying as I had thought. A lot of the characters were obnoxious and entirely unbelievable, and I couldn't help yelling at them to get out the door, or to stand up, or basically act like you fucking should in that situation. I don't normally do that, and I'm assuming it was a result of the first person perspective used.

Fun for those with an appreciation for horror. The anthology format means none of the stories overstay their welcome which is a positive when some are weaker than others. However the framing narrative, which is itself weak, means that every story starts similarly which becomes repetitive. Still, while you often know what's coming, the suspense is frequently fun and a few scenes here and there made this worth watching.

Moderately watchable reimagining of the postmodern horror genre. The usual benefits and drawbacks of the POV camera are all present (why has that technique become so entrenched in the genre?), although pleasingly most of the short stories do have a redeeming element of originality or a twist which takes them into the supernatural realm. 2 hours of damaged home video quality footage is a tough sell, presumably all in the name of art.

David Bruckner's short is by far the best and starts the anthology off with a bang, but then each subsequent short gets worse and worse in quality until you just want the thing to end. The first two segments are well done, Second Honeymoon is particularly creepy precisely because of the lack of supernatural elements. From there on in it's more of a light-hearted amusement ride with scattered death. Better than Creepshow in terms of a horror anthology, disregarding the latter's nostalgic value to a lot of people.

Far, far better than I expected. I have always felt the idea behind found footage films is no less valid than any other, and that its relatively low budget and creative requirements are what have led to it being such a trashy genre, rather than any inherent fault. I think VHS is a great entry not because it traverses any of these issues, but because it embraces and optimises the DIY nature of these films in a way that leads, to state it in the simplest way possible, to a very entertaining film.

I didn't watch any new horror films for a while, and it appears I missed whole new micro-genre known as mumblegore. Whoever came up with this name deserves a candy! The concept was not my thing. It is a collection of horror shorts, shot in the found footage style (with actual cheap cameras, so the quality is quite poor). The stories are unrelated, but pseudo-connected by a background story where some burglass look through a bunch of VHS tapes to find the "right" one. The movie itself and its sub-stories are a collection of glimpses, thus leaving you with a lot of questions - on purpose of course, but in such a degree it simply annoyed me.

It was only a matter of time until a found-footage style horror anthology was made. Most of the directors had done horror before (and Calvin Reeder cameos but sadly doesn't direct) and I had watched their films and was surprised that Bruckner's segment is the best and Swanberg's the worst. West is tasteful as usual, but other segments were too cliched. Acting is also inconsistent (some is great but Moerlein and Kaufman sucked). V/H/S is very flawed but certainly effective enough to recommend.

Anthologies tend to be a hit-and-miss affair, but V/H/S is generally a hit, a creepy compilation of twenty-minute-ish found-footage horror stories, each offering different takes on the power of the supernatural, the sexualisation of horror, and the terror lurking in the unknown. This movie really looks like found footage, too - for better and worse (I got a headache watching the thing!) full review at Letterboxd

This package of found footage horror has its ups and downs. First of all, I must say that the casting of girls was superb for a horror film. yowza. The setups for some of the short films were also very intriguing. The stuff I hated about this movie was the ultra shaky camera work that makes the Blair Witch Project look like it was filmed with a steady cam. Also there was no real way of tying these movies together and had a super lame ending that pretty much ruined the experience.

As it tackles subgenres with an attractive amateurish sense of discovery, V/H/S looks just pale -- we know in most of horror films women are either evil or bitches, but, guys, why so many tits in here? Radio Silence's is the best -- and not because it didn't show bare breasts. I expected more from West's stalker story and Swanberg's Skype material and the Blair Witch-y remake is pretty lame. The first is kind of cool -- and still misogynist, though -- and the frame narrative barely clicked.

It was entertaining. I don't know what happened to horror films in general though - why aren't they scary any more. This had some compelling ideas: the Skype episode in particular, and the first 'glasses camera' vignette was pretty good. But the rest just relied on cliches and tropes. Anyone who can watch this and find it genuinely terrifying, good for you, I wish I could have done that.

It's like a more updated and twisted version of Tales from the Darkside. The premise of stumbling upon a trove of horrific vhs tapes is great. However, the setups get repetitive as we see the same horror tropes repeated..annoying people chatting inanely for long stretches, horror movie sex stuff, weird things happen, they all die. Rinse and repeat. Despite its issues it does employ decent tension at moments and some weird abstract visual effects. It also has truly vile gore for the gore hounds.

Wasn't impressed, but I had good time with it. I mean if you dislike an episode it's disposed of in 20 minutes anyway instead of a fulltime torture. First, skype and the last pieces are the edible ones. The enveloping piece is quite bad and doesn't do good for the movies memorability factor. It made me think if each filmmaker wasn't completely free and contributed to a grand plan, putting emphasis on -these weird things are happening all around- it would have been better.

I think horror works better in short films, so anthologies like this always pique my interest, and this had some of the most creative use of the found footage technique I've seen. Most of the segments were pretty good, though Tuesday the 17th felt really clunky and kind of slowed everything down. 10/31/98 was really good but the ending felt tonally inconsistent with the rest of the shorts, which I guess is the result of the directors not working off of a central theme. The ideas behind the films are mostly fresh, and if they aren't, they are presented freshly, and the way it's presented overall is creepy, hinting and showing in the right amounts, and simply enjoyable and immersing. I recently came across Marble Hornets on Youtube, and this movie pales in comparison to it. Why spend money to watch this when you can get better scares in an identical format, of equal quality, but with an actual story and a much longer run time (which is good, IMO). Plus, there is a large amount of unnecessary nudity that made me uncomfortable, but I guess figuring the movie that it was in, it wasn't exactly out of place because of how pointless it all was anyway. Each segment has its moments. The girl in the first was neat, second was overall the best (Ti West continuing to keep the horror flame alive), the third's distortion effect was Predator-esque, the fourth's gore was nice and the fifth was very well done (unless the effects at the end were CGI, in which case it sucked). The directors in these vignettes play with found-footage and horror conventions in cool ways, and it looks like they were all told to make segments exploring the concept of violation. I admire the concept and the fact that each segment has its own director to deliver its own unique touch, but...found footage in the end feels very repetitive. Certainly better than Blair Witch but not as interesting as Marble Hornets.

Great fun with a strong thematic link between all the found-footage style horror shorts. Most have a few jump scares, a few moments of dread building up, sometimes brilliant effects and a great exploration of misogyny and male gaze in horror cinema - much of the film seems to actively deconstruct this - the "good guys" are all horrible and the bad guys wreak havoc upon them, providing us with both catharsis when the nasty stuff happens but also just enough horror to feel bad when it does.
