At parts enjoyably trashy, at parts numbingly boring.

Worth sitting through this just for the guffaws elicited by Patty Duke especially. One of the great unintentional comedies.

absolutely ruins the novel's brilliant structure and leaves out so many major characters and plot points that the story doesn't really hold together. that said, patty duke makes a pretty great neely.

First hour, not so good. Second hour? Premium 60's Hollywood sleaze. Sure it's candy coated just like the pills but that's what makes it go down so easy.

A wonderful cheesefest. The flushing-the-wig scene alone is worth the price of admission.

Entertaining in parts, and boring in others, this film is worth watching if you're in the mood for a truly camp classic. Patty Duke's hissyfits are completely over-the-top, while Sharon Tate shows that she was no great actress (how she was nominated for a Golden Globe for this I will never know!). But the dialogue is hilarious at times, and if Showgirls with drugs in the 60's is what you're after then you'll likely have a good time watching this.

I'm not sure exactly who this movie was made for... the majority of it is so tame and milquetoast I could hardly believe it--especially during the first half hour, which is almost nothing but musical numbers. But then it's dealing with some pretty heavy issues later on. The theme song is great, though, and I enjoyed seeing a movie about women that didn't act as if women are all the same, with all the same problems.

Surprisingly square for a camp classic. The incomparable Helen Lawson is a fucking goddess and Neely O'Hara's meltdown is jaw droppingly hysterical but much of the movie is simply dull, sappy and dorky unlike Russ Meyer's delirious "sequel".
