Not bad.

Underwhelming biopic that combines manipulative sentimentality (cut to doe-eyed street urchin playing with dirty needle) with broadly drawn stereotypes and clumsy dialogue (people saying "bejaysus" and "eejit" a lot). It's a shame, because the actual true-life story is an interesting one and it touches fleetingly on a number of important issues. It just misfires badly under the guiding hands of Schumacher and Bruckheimer.

Cate Blanchett was fantastic!

Starts off like a good powerful story of a woman's courage that results in her death but sparks great social change. Cate Blanchett is fantastic and really makes the movie due to her excellent portrayal of the title role. The movie literally falls to pieces during the ending though where it shifts gears from a semi-realistic portrayal into sheer slow-motion melodrama complete were about three separate songs designed to be as emotional as possible. Too bad because the movie itself was very good.

A true and powerful story.

Good drama of a true Irish drugsmaffia-story. I don't know if everything is true but I was shocked and the end was very sad. I must confess that Veronica was a stubborn and careless journalist.

Not a film Schumacher should ever have tried to make. He lacks the subtlety & skill to make this film what it should have been. Instead of a powerful drama about Guerin's brave story, we end up with a cheap feeling, overly melodramatic and clumsy movie. Blanchett's talents are wasted & the support cast are okay at best. There is some terrible music in this film & some nasty dialogue too. This has the feel of a film made by an outsider to Ireland, & as such falls into some terrible clichés.

Cate Blanchett was absolutely fabulous as usual. This real life portrait of a journalist crusading against organized crime was entertaining and well shot. Performances all around were excellent, and the story haunting. The real life Veronica Guerin must have been either very brave or very naive because she tempted her fate even after being brutally warned repeatedly. I hope she made a lasting difference for Ireland, but paid the ultimate price for her accomplishments.

Good

Plod plod plod. It takes a particular kind of director to turn such an important and interesting story into a ploddingly awful damp teatowel of a film. The best thing about it is the ever excellent Father Todd Unctious, I mean Gerard McSorley.
