Summary: Japan, 2077: A female agent named Vexille is dispatched to Tokyo to investigate whether Japanese are developing robotic technology, which has been banned by the U.N.
A Ghost in the Shell clone, that - while spectacular to watch (and I'm saying this as a strong opponent of CG-Anime) lacks the heart and soul to make it stand on it's own.
I really enjoyed the story. Up until the middle, when it got plain stupid. And the ending was even beyond that. Other than interesting first half I can't find any redeeming qualities in this film. Animation is good looking, but I simply hate CGI. Always keep waiting till the intro cinematics ends and I can start playing that damn videogame. Soundtrack is the worst aspect of the film. It's like some person with a terrible taste in music left winamp's playlist on shuffle.
A decent concept wrapped in an unimpressive film. The junk worm thingy looked neat. Other than that, the visuals are pretty crappy--telling the two female characters apart wasn't easy. Not that it mattered any. On that note, I find it ridiculous that the movie's namesake has so little to do in this. Why is she the main character? She's certainly not the protagonist in this film. Why are we supposed to care about her again? I mean, does anyone like her? C'mon.
Your standard japanese CGI production: bullshit storyline, terrible visuals and bad guy with sunglasses. I am still waiting for something as good as Ghost in the Shell.
Below Average. The Japanese take great pride in the intricate and deep storylines of their anime productions. But sometimes its a hit or miss affair and here they missed. It features great animation sprinkled throughout but they forgot to add a half-decent plot to balance the eye candy upon. Take your pick from the vast treasure trove of worthy anime, just avoid this one. Not Recommended.
I couldn't help but think about the Ghost in the Shell series when I watched this film, and I have to say, GitS does everything better. The soundtrack, the philosophical storyline, character development, usage of the cyberpunk genre; while all of it was present in Vexille, it lacked that certain polish you'd come to expect from an anime that covers these topics.
This had the potential to be so, so good. The beginning was fantastic, but right around the time that they go to Japan, everything turns to utter shit. The plot goes to hell, and the ending is a total mess. I'll be sticking with Appleseed, thanks.
