Saw at TIFF along with Q&A from director Geoffrey Fletcher. Good but very uneven. Great opening and sets the tone that this hitman film isn't going to be what you expect. Drags a bit towards the end but overall worth seeing.

It took me less than a couple of minutes to find out that 'Violet & Daisy' was not for me. Feeling like a flick fresh out of the '90s, the two assassins chit-chat before performing a hit in nun's costumes while delivering a pizza. Why? Who knows and you're not supposed to care. It's just supposed to be cool because it exists. It's trying very hard to set a surreal tone and instead feels derivative of the Sundance era of Tarantino and Rodriguez. Gandolfini is the only saving grace of the picture.

What makes a film cool? Definitely not trying hard to be cool... Fletcher's film just is. And inventive, too. One of the more refreshingly different flicks for quite some time, the bonkers premise and professional assassin title characters, superbly played by Bledel and Ronan, actually get somewhat emotionally charged payoffs, thanks also to Gandolfini's grounded effort. It is most definitely not what you'd expect from the writer of 'Precious'! Can't wait to see what this guy comes up with next.
