Summary: Acclaimed actor Richard E. Grant's semi-autobiographical "coming-of-age at the end of an age" story is told through the eyes of young Ralph Compton (Hoult). Set during the last gasp of the British Empire in Swaziland, South East Africa, in 1969, the plot focuses on the dysfunctional Compton family whose gradual disintegration mirrors the end of British rule. An okay film, enjoyable, light and breezy. Not enough happening though, it all seems like too much lightness. Some questionable scenes as well. I get the feeling it didn't know what kind of film it was; coming of age, romantic drama, family drama and historical drama, it flashes through all of the above. The acting was good though.

Byrne is very good, but he really is this movies only highlight. For the most part however "Wah-Wha" is unspeakably bland. Somehow Grant manages to water down any semblance of Swazi culture or influence on this movie to the point where it is almost non-existant. Perhaps that was his intention, who knows? But whatever his intention, it doesn't work.

"An unforced, engaging and surprisingly incisive account of the disintegration of British rule in Africa."

The acting is stellar; the story is dull. It can be skipped.
