Summary: When an ex-superhero is murdered, a vigilante named Rorshach begins an investigation into the murder, which begins to lead to a much more terrifying conclusion.
Zack Snyder brillantly adapts the brutal stylized action and thought-provoking messages of this highly celebrated graphic novel to the big screen. It's fairly close to the written page and he does a really good job of establishing and maintaing the tone of the book. The look and feel of the movie will amaze you from the very start. The action is extremely violent and intense. Parents need to know that the movie is absolutely not for kids. The movie is a masterpiece and worth the almost 3 hours.
Reviewing the extended cut and I have to say it is one damn fine movie. Though it's not necessarily a super-hero movie, as few have super powers and most are simply past their prime, but rather a drama that involves super heroes. While I don't feel it offers a grand social commentary that some others feel it does, or attempts to do, it does offer a compelling and intelligent character driven story. It's three hours long and I wasn't bored for a second. Kudos to Snyder for another great adaption.
A far better adaptation than I expected (remember, Watchmen has often been called "unfilmable"), and for that alone Snyder deserves kudos. A lot of backstory and story arcs had to be left out, but everything essential is still here; enough for the attentive viewer to see coherence in the meandering plot. Great acting, especially from Haley and Morgan. The revised ending is honestly far better than Moore's original and seals one of the most uncompromising films ever made.
The special effects and fight scenes were pretty fun to watch. I never read the comics so I don't really care if that stuff matches or not. I think I enjoyed the Manhattan character the most, since I couldn't figure out if he was good or bad for most of the movie. I thought the Rorschach voice would start to annoy me, but it never did. My only knock on this was the ending. I found it muddled and thought the whole finishing of Rorschach was a little random, but maybe I just didn't get that.
Definitely an amazing film if you're a fan of the graphic novel. If you're not a fan, the film is still pretty good, though it likely won't rank as high.
This was so fucking terrible you would not believe it. HOURS OF BLUE PENIS. BLUE PENIS. Too much nudity and way too long. Rorschach was the only correct part.
Upon more careful thought I've given it a lower score. The flaws are relatively minor and don't really subtract from the overall experience very much. Everything makes perfectly thematic sense, such as the "odd" choice of music. It's serious and ridiculous and because of that it's challenging. It embodies both of those things so it has to polarize people. Also, knowing the comic helped me like it but I didn't nitpick either. Guess this is another case of me being easier on films.
Very unique film for some of us, even many thinks that destruction of millions is unacceptable, to stop destruction of billions, it is easly acceptable.
I love Rorschach and The Comedian, and could have done with far less Dr. Manhattan dong. The rest is enjoyable, save for Malin Ackerman (fuck, what an awful actress) and I would likely see it again.
Snyders film suffers from the same problems that Sin City did: The director is so huge a fan boy of the comic book, that he insists on following it almost religiously (except the changed ending). This makes for a stunningly beautiful picture with a terrible flow. In my opinion V for Vendetta remains the only really successful Alan Moore adaptation, because it had the balls to change the narrative in order to remain true to the comic book.
Someone out there likely thinks that this film is deep and relevant, but they've likely only ever stuck to the comic books themselves. This film knows its audience, and it's almost exclusively for that audience, if you don't find yourself checking out comic books and their silver-screen incarnations all that often, you'll be left with a semi-thoughtful and slightly entertaining film. Oh, and don't even pretend to think that it'll make sense if you haven't read the source material.
This film is the film that shows the human and darker side of heroes and that in a superb way. We see they are human after all, they have their bad characteristics and can be mad and violent too. What a great film and idea. And the music really fits superbly in this movie, jus tas all the visual techniques. Rorschach is js ta great character..
I think had of it been a tad shorter, well make that maybe an hour shorter, then I might have enjoyed it more; but this was a very long movie with a few unnecessary scenes in there. Other than that it was pretty good with some very memorable characters and an interesting storyline from start to finish. Jackie Earle Haley is the stand-out as the mysterious Rorschach, and I also quite liked Laurie Jupiter, played by Malin Åkerman. Overall a good Action film and worth checking out :)
snyder tones down his slow mo infatuation for this one (and it's a good thing) turns out to be a mostly engaging and wholly entertaining movie. i could do without so much of the drama, but i can make consessions since jackie earle haley made my entire year, he is the bad ass noir detective that none of the 50's ones could ever live up to.
Would have ideally worked as a miniseries, and is at times accurate to a fault; but for the most part, it works. The soundtrack is great, even though some of the cues were awkward, and the acting ranges from great to so-so, but it is otherwise technically flawless. Considering some of the failed attempts to get this to the screen, we were lucky to get this. I expect the 3 hour director's cut is going to be better and more in-depth than the theatrical cut.
Watchmen provides an impressive amount of depth into the exploration of superheroes regarding corruption. The adaptation does a good job in driving the plot in a clear way and the action scenes are directed well, however I felt the use of slow motion scenes were excessive. The choice of music was poor in contributing to the engagement of the film as well.
