Amazing family drama/gangster film set in the late 1980s, in which the characters' feelings seem more resonant than their actions. Gray's imagery is so subjective that, when you have a car chase, you can barely breath while Phoenix sees his father get hit. And, because it is also a duel about opposite brothers, it takes its time to give us what we want -- one telling the other he loves him, in the last shot. Bobby had even to quit his girl and beat his best friend in order to protect his bro.
This was a lot better than I was expecting, and the mediocre reviews puzzle me. Joaquin Phoenix is such a compelling actor, and the plot and action (particularly the rain-soaked car chase) were extremely exciting.
Determined, solid and a little flat. This is in part because the characters are fairly dull, not registering as full-blown people instead of cogs in the storytelling machine. While much of the film's emotional impact hinges on the enduring bond of family, the needed sense of deep attachment between the characters isn't there. So the film works when Gray's craftsmanship can overcome those shortcomings.
Boring. Generic as shit characters that are completely dull and uninteresting, and a plot that is just a poor man's Departed. This film is shit, avoid it.
Did I enjoy it? I guess so. The pacing kept it engaging, even if few of the individual elements worked. When the film got slow, that's when things went bad. It's not like the first hour and a bit are extremely action-packed, either. It's just that there's enough going on to keep us interested. We don't need random shootouts, but we do need some sort of movement. There are about twenty minutes when this comes to a halt, and you'll reflect during this time and realize this isn't a great film.
