It is entertaining it a lot of ways. There are a few intense scenes and the acting is hit and miss (Phoenix carries it). All that being said it's not really anything special. There are a lot of parts that aren't good about it. Really tried to fit too much story/character development in too little of time and felt quite rushed, especially everything after the apartment raid. Nothing more than a rental movie.

A harsh, heartbreaking story of a family on different sides of the law. Joaquin is excellent, Duvall is always a commanding presence. James Gray's directing is discreet yet sophisticate. A most pleasant surprise.

Thank you James Gray for a finger-licking good New York cop/crime drama reminiscent of the masters Sidney Lumet and William Friedkin. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, Gray tackles familiar themes with finesse, providing an understated drama with unnervingly suspenseful set pieces and a stellar and excellently directed cast.
