A harsh, heartbreaking story of a family on different sides of the law. Joaquin is excellent, Duvall is always a commanding presence. James Gray's directing is discreet yet sophisticate. A most pleasant surprise.

Bunch of stereotypes thrown together to create a cliché plot with very cliché characters.

Come on it has some cool scenes, but its predictable as hell and the relationship between Joaquin and Eva isn't very interesting.

I'm a Joaquin Phoenix fan, so it kinda saved it that he was in it, and Eva Mendes was hot as always, but it didn't live up to what I had hoped.

Poor writing and pace. Character development is hilariously crappy. Phoenix, as he often does, makes the film somewhat bearable. Passes the time, I guess.

It's ok, but has pretentions of being profoundly great, which it is not.

Joaquin Phoenix carries the film with a fine performance, while Mark Wahlberg and Robert Duvall fade in the background in a cliche-fueled crime thriller/police procedural needing a bit more drive. This could've been a cable movie but it has its heart in the right place, some tense scenes find their way to the surface and Joaquin is very good. It's just not all quite there.

Just average. But I like Mark Wahlberg in this type of role.

It's interesting, but it peaks out early with the apartment raid and never tops itself after that. Also, it's utterly, profoundly ridiculous that Joaquin Phoenix's character would be allowed to be on the front lines of a police drug raid - brandishing a shotgun no less! - while having absolutely no formal police training whatsoever.

Except for an absolutely amazing car-chase sequence to start the third act, this film is slow, dull, and falls flat on its face in every way.

Pretty big letdown

Kinda like meh. But not entirely meh.

Entertaining but underwhelming.

The drug bust and the car chase are magnificent. The rest is an uninteresting bore. What do you expect? It's James Gray.

Few good scenes can't save this film. Story is dumb, but I liked the dampness of it. I wonder who James Gray slept with to get into Cannes each year, with the films that doesn't feel like Cannes material at all.

Starts pretty well but in the middle Gray decides to throw the whole premise, of two brothers on opposite sides of the law, into the bin. Would have been better if they had focused more on the conflicts of Joaquin Phoenix's character.

There's a lot of poorly executed scenes, and the movie is just crammed with millions of flaws and plotholes. I can't really seem to think of anything good about this.
