Hey, let's remake Hamburger Hill but instead fill it with patriotic nonsense and passing allusions to the Thin Red Line.

A passable war movie that saves itself from complete disarray with a handful of awesome shots and a particularly strong performance by mel gibson. the rest of the film often comes off as corny and is full of stereotypes and war cliches. besides mr. gibson and greg kinnear, none of the performances are memorable. greg kinnear should have been in it more, too.

well made but extremely cliched.

WWS might appear to glorify war, with men dying for God & Country, but that is not the case at all: by the end of the battle, all the facades are stripped and shown to be false. If anything, this film shows war's arbitrary stupidity, the nameless who died at the expense of idiots in War Rooms, as the last scenes literally tell us. WWS just happens to use conventional, '40's tropes to get you to care about its heroes, which is where it falters. Extra kudos to adding intelligence to the Viet Cong.

Uninspired war movie that avoids the broken morals and other shady foreign policy ideals surrounding Vietnam in favor of portraying heroic battle scenes and strategy. Every single actor also looks tailor made for a Hollywood war movie archetype right down to recasting Barry Pepper and using Madeleine Stowe as the sexy emotionally teary eyed wife. This is pure manipulative drivel but at least the battle scenes were kind of neat..I guess.

I laughed way more than I should have when that bugler gets shot in the neck halfway through a note.

Typical macho Hollywood bollocks. If you miss a cliche, don't worry, there will be another one along within a matter of seconds. I shouldn't have been surpised with Gibbo, but the religosity was overwhelming. Maybe this should have been called "We Were Catholics"? Some extra points scored for the even handed treatment of the NVA.
