Deals with human emotions on a very natural level that is both very emotional but also very honest in a non-sentimental way.

An effective, brave film. I'm not bored by human behavior naturally arcing through dialogue. In fact, an understated drama is usually something I can sink my teeth into so long as that special balance is made between captivating filmmaking and interesting characters. Weekend nails this perfectly. It addresses many social issues under the rainbow and manages to be hopelessly romantic without ever sacrificing any realism.

OK, sure, it is not the movie you would normally discuss with boys at the bar (straight one), but I don't think another movie came in the past few years that would feel so real and natural about romantic relationships. Great screen chemistry between the leads.

[Spoilery] Incredibly compelling. I rarely see movies that focus on the transient romances of our lives. The ones that don't work out sometimes make the deepest impressions.

Even better than Linklaters Sunrise/Sunset duo, "Weekend" is the most natural, insightful and endearing romance I've seen in a long while. Pairing two very different lovers without resorting to (gay) stereotypes, Haigh not only dissects how relationships move from non-confrontational attraction to a state of deeper connectivity, where questioning each other is sensual, not combative, but also pinpoints the heterosexual hegemonic control of the public space and media without pandering.

As is routine for gay films, it is to some extent being overrated by critics looking to make sure everyone knows how hip and non-homophobic they are, but its somewhat overfamiliar nature (see Before Sunrise, etc.) is overcome by strong filmmaking. There is an impressive vein of wistful melancholy that runs through the film without ever dipping into schmaltz, and the naturalistic acting is beyond reproach.

Not since “Lost in Translation” or “Before Sunset” have I seen a more honest portrayal of a brief encounter between two strangers. “Weekend” is a simple film; a breath of fresh air that is charming and quite personal. It’s easily relatable — not just for me or another gay viewer, but for anyone who’s had to deal with a similar situation — and it transcends sexual orientation to become a universal story of powerful human connection.

This movie is so well-made, so well-acted, so intimate and so real... My #2 of 2011, right after A Separation.

It is realistic and I applaud any decent movie effort pertaining to gay relationships, but in retrospect what you watch is ultimately a "lesson" that these two characters learned. A lesson of how a casual fling can tug on your heart...While there is nothing wrong with that I always look for a message of some value. The intimacy was filmed well and tasteful, but the drug use was a bit out of my taste. While its easy to connect with the characters, nothing really of any substance was accomplished

Nice to see a gay film that is worthy of our proud race, rather than the usual chintzy shit! Beautiful film.

Feels like Before Sunset / Before Sunrise, except not as interesting. The reason why those movies worked was because it felt natural, but still retained the snappiness of a script. This felt unscripted and natural, which is boring for the most part. Another reason those other movies were better is because they took place within a shorter period of time, so you can get into it more. When it's over the course of a weekend, there are many breaks in the flow which kind of ruins it.
