Summary: Novalee Nation is a pregnant 17-year-old from Tennessee heading to California with her boyfriend Willie Jack, but is abandoned by him at a Wal-Mart store in Sequoyah, Oklahoma. Novalee has no job, no skills and only $5.55 in her pocket, so she secretly lives in the Wal-Mart until her daughter Americus is born six weeks later. Novalee decides to raise her daughter and rebuild her life in Sequoyah, with the help of eccentric but kind strangers. Based on the best-selling novel by Billie Letts. (imdb)
All the situations are cliche, trite, and predictable. All the dialog is stupid, poorly delivered, and ditzy. The story-line is irrelevant and really drawn out. It's like a film a bunch of cheerleaders would have written, directed, and stared.
Caught this thing on TV, late at night, a few years ago and it stuck with me. Considering it's very unpretentious, I found it to be quite enjoyable. Then again I do love Natalie Portman, so I might be a bit lenient here.
So ridiculous that the only thing you can do is sit back and smile at all that is happening in this movie aka I enjoyed it much more than I should have. It's hard not to laugh at a character named Americus Nation while the film is trying to make you take it seriously. If there's anything to take away it's the promise of what Natalie Portman was to become as she essentially carried the entirety of the film so I'm okay with being a little lenient with my score.
I saw it on a plane once, and wish I'd brought my parachute so I could walk out. These have to be the worst character names I've ever heard. Novalee Nation? Willie Jack? Lexie Coop? Forney Hall? Sister Husband???? I'm actually crying from laughter, and I haven't even mentioned the Wal-Mart baby.
Right. As if "Wall-Mart Baby" wouldn't have been a better title. The winner here is Ashley, who looks great in white trash & is a kick to boot. The loser is, well, the empty headed script which continues to follow the x-boyfriend when we could really care less about getting even, & Natalie who is rather uninteresting.
Cute movie, developed from the book with the same title. In High School I watched the movie instead of the book. Entertaining movie, Portman carries the movie. If you're a fan of hers you can make it through the movie, it's no Closer though
