Campy late '60s time capsule. A bit too silly to take seriously. The cast is great, though, with Pryor especially good in an early role, as one of Jones's devoted followers.
A film much more fun to talk about than it is to watch. It's not particularly funny and they seem to want us to fall in love with an imaginary teen pop idol.
In all likelihood, this is the most wildly overrated movie of the 60s. (Here I go again) nowhere nearly as much fun as the cast and synopsis make it sound
Good/interesting cast, with a Brad Pitt lookalike in the lead role. Treads an uneasy path between searing drama and farce. A number of silly songs featuring numbers (thus making it seem more like a Broadway musical than a movie); the exception was the trenchant "Shape of Things To Come." Still, where else are you gonna get to see Richard Pryor and Greg Brady in the same film?
