You've decided to remember Will Ferrell: You're Welcome America - A Final Night with George W Bush for later. You can see all your remembered films here.
Summary: Will Ferrell portrays George W. Bush for the last time in this Broadway show where Bush shares with the audience his complex thoughts on his life while he was still in Texas as well as his experience being, arguably, the worst ever president of the United States. (whobody)
Painfully lame. Surely with a mark as easy as George W. there's no need for dick jokes (and I'm not talking about the Cheney kind). Ferrell fumbles in and out of character, and this Bush is never close to being as funny or poignant as, say, Jon Stewart's version. After 90 minutes of missing the target completely, the most memorable thing was the breakdancing Secret Service guy, and he wasn't funny either.
It's no longer fresh, and the overall quality of this special is fairly inconsistent, but when it hits, it really hits hard. Bush remains a great source of caricature humour and no one hits him with the fierce absurdity of Ferrell. Stuff like recounting getting lost in a mineshaft on the Bush family property is so incredibly funny, as are a number of under-reported presidential initiatives. The jokes can be a bit easy, but if this is Ferrell retiring the character, he's going out in fine form.
The 3 YouTube trailers were utterly hilarious so I was pretty pumped; sadly, the show does not live up to those trailers, and while I like Ferrell and it certainly is very funny at times, in the end this was a bit of a disappointment.
Ferrell has put more work into the other things he's done, but that doesn't mean this isn't brilliant. George W. Bush talking about pumping money into a Morroccan monkey army is probably one of the funnier jokes of the last several years.
Not much funnier than a night at the local stand-up comedy club, "Will Ferrell: You're Welcome America - A Final Night with George W. Bush" takes easy pot-shots at the former President of the United States. Will Ferrell was definitely the best George W. on SNL, but those segments were short and topical. Now, these jokes have been told numerous times and there's not much added here. The production adds a bit, but also opens it up for easy jokes, like showing a penis for the sake of it.
First off I'll say flat out that I am a fan of Will Ferrell so when I say that this is completely lackluster I want to be clear that it's not a knee-jerk "It's Ferrell so it sucks" reaction. There are some good jokes in here and it's nice to see Bush get the absolute piss taken out of him after so many atrociously bad decisions as president. Still it's just not very entertaining and ends up being a lackluster, boring at times, cheap riff.
