At first, James Stewart seems a little out of place in the old west, but once you get used to it, it actually works really well. A nice flick. I liked the climactic scene on the mountain-thingy.

It's fun and really well constructed. The set pieces lead into each other beautifully and not a moment is wasted.

Hudson as an indian is hilarious, though I suspect that wasn't their intention. Other than that a fine film.

Precedes Peckinpah's later revisionist western The Wild Bunch in having that subtle irony of people killing each other over a weapon, but unlike Peckinpah's realism, it doesn't seem that W'73 fully grasps the tragedy of it. It's very nicely made, but naive and contrived like most of its contemporaries, and Stewart and Winters' performances didn't impress me too much in this one.

i have no big complaints, stewart pulls it off pretty well and the movie was aptly written. if you're in the mood for a western and are looking for one less talked about, but still fairly good, then give this one a shot.

I guess the moral of the story is: Don't make products in limited supply; people will go crazy and kill one another.

I found the story a bit intriguing, but apart from that the film has no special quality: awful setting, awful costumes, why black and white ? James Stewart, what the hell is he doing there ? skip it...

Classic Western. Jimmy Stewart made a surprisingly good gunfighter/tough guy in this phase of his career

A film-noir set in the Old West, and a plum postwar role for an edgier, darker Jimmy Stewart.

This one has a great gimmick with the Winchester macguffin, following the gun around from one undeserving owner to another. More importantly, it's just a fun movie with some good action scenes that avoids wallowing in most of the genre trappings. I could have done without the "savage" Indians (Rock Hudson!) but that's just the bleeding heart liberal in me. Jimmy Stewart is pretty great in it. The film looks mighty good, too.

This movie follows a prized gun that originally won by Jimmy Stewart's character and it got stolen and traded around throughout the movie while he tracks it down. Another one of Jimmy's good westerns.

Fun pretty much sums this up.
