Winged Migration (2001)

Summary: The cameras of Jacques Perrin fly with migratory birds: geese, storks, cranes. The film begins with spring in North America and the migration to the Arctic; the flight is a community event for each species. Once in the Arctic, it's family time: courtship, nests, eggs, fledglings, and first flight. Chicks must soon fly south. Bad weather, hunters, and pollution take their toll. Then, the cameras go south of the Equator; Antarctica is the summer destination... (imdb)

Visually one of the most striking movies I've ever seen. As a documentary, it's totally relaxing and engrossing. I should also mention I'm a total bird-lover, so this has an extra appeal for me. (I admit I cracked up at the juxtaposition of the Bald Eagle glaring at the Canada Geese)

I grew watching a lot of PBS nature programs and the Wild Kingdom and despite the comments from people that this was "different", I disagree. Yes, there were some incredible shots, but if you've seen a lot of nature docs, I don't think this is really worth seeing.

Inspiring, provocative, and technically extraordinary footage nearly spoiled by a repetitive distracting new-age/faux-world-music soundtrack, and less informative voice-over than surely would have been possible.

This is to movies what screen savers are to computers. I've considered many times picking this up just to have on in the background. Some of the tracking shots are incredible whether they are high in the air or just off the ground. Bonus marks for the great soundtrack by Bruno Coulais.

You will like this only if you are a bird-lover. Frankly nothing in it for the casual movie-goer.

Some nice photography of flying birds. After the initial amazement and question "How the hell did they film that?" wears off, the film gets pretty pointless. I didn't like the 'medieval' folk soundtrack, and that is a big portion of a movie, since there are only a few lines of narration. For me this film falls behind Microcosmos and March of the Penguins.

After about 50 breathtaking shots of birds flying over gorgeous landscapes, you start to crave some variety. There are interesting moments, but they're too few and far between. Great cinematography, but ultimately kinda pointless.

Yep - it's just birds. But dang if it isn't some of the most mesmerizing and beautiful imagery you could ever imagine. As someone who is not that into birds, I was amazed at how much I loved watching this movie. I regret not seeing this in a theater.

I don't even knew why I rented this, I knew it was just going to be an 80 minute screensaver. That's to say, a really pretty screensaver. There are some really beautiful panoramas and some breathtaking shots of birds (my favourite must be the birds flying while the horses are running, or the camera going down the cliff to the sea as birds come out of nowhere), but the film really has nothing else to offer. I guess it might interest a photo buff or a Bird Observer reader, but no one else, really.
