Its a good story and it is well-told with some excellent performances. A very neat explanation of the backwood American story with the whole movie being dull with grey color and the local community comprising of grizzly-bearded old men and the weary wrinkled faces of women who are violently supportive.

A movie about extreme poverty and meth labs in the USA.The yong girl looking after her sick mother and younger siblings must find her druggie dad or get kicked off her property which would leave her family comletely destitute. It is a good movie.

Winter's Bone is not a film that particularly impressed me. It's entertaining some of the time, but boring more often than not. It features great acting in both the lead and the supporting cast, but that didn't save the film for me. The story just ends up burning out far too quickly, and never recapturing how well it starts out. Not terrible, but also not a film that you need to rush out to see.

An unconventional neo-noir, with a great performance from Jennifer Lawrence and an effective brooding quality. It's unconventional due to the location it's set in, and the low-key, depressing quality it has, but it also epitomises noir at its most uninteresting, even frustrating, in terms of plotting. The plot progression feels arbitrary, and the ending is too convenient. Still, there's a rural horror at the heart of the film which keeps it interesting.

It's a very good film with several great performances from Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes and Dale Dickey. It's not exactly a "happy" movie and I'm not sure I am up for revisiting it for awhile.

Wonderfully bleak and empty

Bleaker than 'Boj na poziralniku'

Apparently all men are childish, selfish, and pathetic wife-beaters. I mean it's more or less true, but they didn't have to bring it home so hard. I kid. Speaking of home though, apparently I grew up in the Canadian equivalent to rural Missouri, since this film hit a little too close to it.

Generally well-done and nicely photographed low-key, low-budget drama. On the other hand, the characters are still infused with some Hollywood folksiness, the narrative is a bit more conventionally manipulative than it wishes to admit, the sensibility is a bit too attuned toward garnering approval from critics and audiences, the protagonist is a little too heroic, and the denouement is rather underwhelming.

Nice to see Sheryl Lee back in a movie.

Rural Missouri is given the treatment that is normally reserved for the inner city -- in a gritty, unglamorous environment, the local banned substance franchise maintains tight control over their underlings, and innocents suffer when violations occur against the organizational code. By casting many amateur locals, this seems like a less funny, all-white version of The Wire.

Well-shot "Ozark noir" that fascinates as much as anything else. Captures a portion of American life -- the meth-addled backwoods -- that one rarely sees so realistically portrayed.

It looks great, is "gritty", and there are some good performances, but it's just too slow moving. Shouting at plot holes might make this a fun time.

Beautifully acted and directed this film sucks you in in an instant and does not let go and has the ability to make the fact you are watching fiction dissolve. These were real people to me and that is what makes this so emotional as well as engrossing. One of the years best but then you already know that.

A harsh story, but leavened with enough humanity and compassion that it doesn't become an ordeal. Great understated final scene.

The one-dimensional characters, repetitive plot progression, and unnecessarily slow pace brought nothing but boredom to the violent simplicity. Teardrop was the only interesting thing about it, and he barely made sense. As far as the style went, I call that point-and-shoot (in cloudy weather), and the "realism" would have felt more real if at anytime one of the characters would've had a thought; it was all reactive. I know there are people like this, but I don't see the point in making the film.

Very strong characters seem to be Jennifer Lawrence's specialty. She's a bet of mine for stardom in the future.

The movie has a good story which is backed by some good acting. I believe the movie has got a lot more praise than it deserves but that still doesnt take away the fact that it is a good movie. It does fall apart a bit towards the end. Over all a decent movie.

A well acted yet immensely depressing movie. I never want to travel through the rural south.....ever.

very good movie that manages to make a sort of horror film out of people, which with the way horror films have been going (supernatural) its a welcome atmosphere. not to say this is a horror film, but it has those elements for sure.

Absolutely compelling and believable, about a section of society that doesn't often get the spotlight. But these people exist! Some of them not far from where my parents live!

Part mystery, part rural crime drama this is really good at both, even if it sometimes feels unfocused. Great performances too.

truly authentic and very low-key storytelling. the cast is wisely chosen, embodying the harsh and unwelcoming redneck community perfectly. exceptional performance by jennifer lawrence, also setting and scenery are beyond any doubt. add this up and you're in for one believable trip through american rural misery.

Amazing performances and intense.

High quality, very tense, neo-noir style drama, with great casting and a simple script and plot executed to perfection. Lawrence is excellent and carries the whole film on her shoulders, but her support cast are very good too.

Great performance by Jennifer Lawrence in a bleak, but touching film about an forced-to-grow-up-fast girl hunting down her drug-dealing father.

Granik's finely-tuned evocation of the poverty stricken Ozark community and her windswept cinematography serves as an excellent backdrop to a grimy and simple pulp thriller that never really transcends said pulp roots. Hawkes is spectacular, stealing scene after scene from Lawrence's taciturn but unremarkable lead performance, and everything about the film carries an air of authenticity that's hard to shake, from the dialogue to the cold hues of the backwoods.

Great actors. Especially Jennifer Lawrence with an excellent performance.
