In its sporadic departures from franchise conventions, First Class makes for perhaps the best (and certainly flashiest) of these X-Men pictures. Alas, minus the origin aspects (and the inane Cold War jargon), the plot adheres to the same basic formula as its predecessors -- a fact that sucks most of the fun out of Matthew Vaughn's elaborate prequel.

For a prequel to the X-Men Franchise, First Class is a reasonable movie. Solid gripping action and the charisma of McAvoy and Fassbender are the film's true saving graces. But it goes too far too fast. The film [as most 'part 1's do] should have ended on a positive note. The darker tone from the ending should have been saved for the second film in this new franchise. Aside from this flaw and some blatant action cliches, the movie delivers in terms of satisfying superhero fun.

The best part of the X-franchise yet? Especially the characterization is closing in on flawless - particularly for an ensemble movie in the action genre. Vaughn somehow manages to turn the challenge of introducing a dozen of storylines into his greatest asset and namely the first half focusing on the young Eric and Charles is both fascinating, moving and hilarious. The result: These iconic characters makes more sense than ever - and have arguably never been portrayed this interestingly.

This movie is well-acted. That's about all it has going for it. I wish they could have just stuck with the original story more, they took far too many liberties, and for no good reason. Even though the first two X-Men movies were mediocre at best, I prefer them to this mishmash of explosions and a plot as thin as graphene. The villain in this (who dies, by the way) is actually in the second movie. How's that for a plot hole?

I really didn't x-pect too much from this one, but this is a good x-ample that a later sequel in the franchise doesn't have to be x-crement. This is a true x-ception to the rule. The director did an x-ceptional job with the x-ecution, effectively x-huming the series after the last two. I wouldn't go so far to say this is an x-quisite movie, but it's good to some x-tent. In closing, please forgive the x-pressions and don't forget to solve for x.

Michael Fassbender really is the up and coming star to watch. As a fan of the X-men series I was pleased with everything a saw. Enough characterbuild up, mixed with action. The only thing I hated were the supporting mutans. And Kevin Bacon is awesome in this one.

Worst casting I think I've ever seen for an X-men film, but the two that mattered were near perfect and had excellent chemistry. The choice of mutants was pathetic, and they had so many to choose from, I can't really overlook it. Makes a lot of future plot points rather hard to swallow (yeah, I'm sure that if Mystique and Pro. X lived together as siblings, she'd really try to murder him in X1).

Easily the best of the franchise. Intense and full of likeable characters with a cast that (excluding the awful January Jones) is truly exceptional in their roles. Just like the main trilogy, the truly stand out actors here are those playing Xavier and Magneto. The rest of the cast is solid, making us care about a group of mutants who many people probably aren't even aware of. Everything you can ask for from a comic book film.

McAvoy and Fassbender make this film what it is. While all the comic book action was fun, the one thing they do right here is grab some really good actors. The best way to do a Marvel Comic Book movie is to make the characters interesting first. Then add the flashy effects. Feels like they are getting closer, no?

What a mess. The action set-pieces are unínspired, the dialogue wooden, the effects are often poor, McAvoy is annoying, most of the characters are unlikeable (especially Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence and Lucas Tills), the hip 60's elements are forced, the in-jokes are very tiresome and Beast, Mystique, Azazel and Riptide looks straight out laughable. Is this really from the guy that made Kick-Ass?

Not very often does a movie come along that I think is perfect, but this movie hits all the marks. The cast is wonderful, the action is superb and the story aligns perfectly to fit everything in place where it needs to be.
McAvoy is a wonderful Prof. X and Fassbender is an excellent Magneto.
Kevin Bacon was an interesting bad guy choice but I really ended up liking him.
It amazes me that even with four previously released X-Men movies this one ended up being so amazing.
