Summary: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
I'm not a Jack Black person, yet I saw this film. I don't know why. I hated this movie with ultimate passion. I was upset at Harold Ramis - What happened to him? Jack Black and Michael Cera; what an awful choice of actors as well as supportig actors. Nearly every aspect of this film was disastrous. The humor was obnoxious and retarded, the acting felt like a school play, and everything felt like a mock of history and The Holy Bible. I absolutely hate David Cross. I hate this movie. >X0
God, this film is bad. Real fucking bad. Lots of cameos from all sorts of stars, which is embarrassing too. It's a mockery of history, and not even that funny. Points for Olivia Wilde. She's a sexy mother fucker, and bumps my score up by 15. Otherwise, watch History of the World: Part I. Same premise, better movie. A lot better movie.
Incredibly lazy comedy that feels as aimless and pointless as the characters' journey. There's no real build-up or development, just a collection of scenes on a related topic ("Hey, what else is old? Cain and Abel? Abraham and Isaac? Sodom? Gold!"). That in itself isn't so bad, but the execution is terrible - Cera mumbles, Black gesticulates wildly, gross scatalogical joke is driven into the ground, dull observations about how old everything is ("what's that?" "a wheel!"), repeat ad nauseam.
I'm sorry, I thought Cera was funny. Black is hit or miss as usual but the funnyman bit roles are mostly wasted. David Cross and Paul Rudd are funny people and some of their obvious improv works, but other than that, every other role in the film could have been played by no name actors with none the wiser.
This was more fun then I'd expected. Has a few very lame jokes, but also some new ones. Plotwise it doesn't make much sense, all times are brought together somehow, but who cares? it's comedy!
Is it fair to record this if I fell asleep towards the end? A buddy movie with a biblical slant. Blah, blah, blah.... No laughs to be had, sorry to say.
Get on your high horse and compare it to Mel Brooks all you want, this is a schtick vehicle, plain and simple. Michael Cera either got a lot of improv leeway, or is some sort of line delivery savant.
A funny film but certainly not one to be taken seriously as it's also quite silly. Reminds me of the spoof films around just a little bit with all the slapstick comedy involved. Both Jack Black & Michael Cera work well together but while they are funny they can also be both irritating to watch at times too. Some of the jokes simply did not work, again a common thing with the spoof films too, but there were enough good jokes and funny scenes to make up for it, so it's worth a look for a chuckle.
