It had to happen: the Great Radio Feud between Fields and Charlie McCarthy arrives on the screen, wrapped in Circus Movie costume and a conventional Romantic Subplot. It's not the best of Fields's movies, but the man is at the top of his game, Bergen demonstrates the charm and Character Savvy that made him a beloved star of the nation (it certainly wasn't his ability as a ventriloquist) and with one thing and another there's a heckova lotta pleasure to be had from this item.

Way, way, WAY too much Bergen & McCarthy, not enough W. C. Fields. When I saw the puppet on the cover I had no idea that they would actually give a dummy more screen time than Fields.

W. C. Fields hasn't aged well. Charlie McCarthy kills this movie COMPLETELY. Just frigging awful
