Falls victim to repetition by showing Theron acting drunk and slobbery (while still looking insanely hot!), trying to ruin her ex's marriage and getting slapped some sense into by a wonderfully cast Oswalt. The ever lurking possibility of transition drew a constant interest but the sour note it eventually ends on struck me as insulting and self-centered. Yeah Cody, the past has set, you're an Oscar winning writer now, hold your head up high and fuck everyone else.

Theron rises to the occasion with her convincing, return-to-form performance as the unlikable character. It actually elevates the film. The script itself is good with moments of dry cynical wit but it could have used more depth and narrative drive.

Charlize Theron nails her character. It's funny and dark and interesting. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like it's missing something (I think I feel the same way about all of Reitman's other movies too...)

I really loved many things here, from the 90s alt-rock spirit of being stuck in the past to the sense of pride (by Diablo) and sensibility (Reitman's touch) of the main character. This is basically the same kind of movie that Cameron Crowe (or Alex Payne) is used to do, but much better. Charlize shines.

Theron is great, and the flick on the whole is very well-directed, with a no-holds-barred script that doesn't shy away from painful truths or unlikable protagonists. The dark comedy works very well, and Oswalt puts in a surprisingly excellent performance. I'm not too big on where the plot went, especially towards the end - what could have been a natural conclusion felt like it was reaching to make some vague point - but I was super interested most of the time.

Reitman turns out another great film. And Diablo Cody is back on form with a great script that gives Theron the possibility to shine as a very unlikable protagonist. She shines in a role that in any other film who have been played by a guy.

Good cynical fun, with lots of dark laughs. Theron gives a terrific fearless performance, such self-delusion. Is Reitman taking the mantle from Alexander Payne?

Once again Jason Reitman approaches modern American culture with curiosity and respect. As in Juno and Up in the Air, the question of a worthwhile existence is reflected against varying ways of life, unabashedly exploring their imperfections, but also concluding, once again, that one's perspective is a lot more important than one's situation. Theron plays a brutally tragic character, assured of her own superiority while trying to block out her inadequacies. Good flick.

A brave and thorough character study that serves well as a metaphor for today's widespread fear of embracing adult responsibilities and suburbia. Still, the plot isn't as fascinating as Theron's performance deserves and I have a feeling the movie in general won't linger in my mind.

Theron fits so perfectly in Mavin's shoes, I just don't think this flick would have been half as good if someone else had been cast, she reminds me of Kenny Powers if he was born a she.

The movie is predictable and cynical. The acting by Patton Oswalt is great and Charlize Theron puts on a decent performance. The movie portrays a nice conflict between the Mavis Gary (Therone) the people back from her home. The movie isnt not on par with Juno, Up in the Air or Thank you for smoking.

Theron's character here is Archie Bunker reborn as a Maxim cover girl, or Cartman with a sex change. It's something remarkable, despite, or in spite of, Cody's self-appreciating field loop (i.e. dialogue). This succeeds because the ending is one of the bravest and best audience Fuck Yous I've seen in quite a while, and I loved it.

I'm usually all for movies, comics or TV shows with an "unlikable" protagonist. Mavis was indeed a damaged, unlikable character. She gets away with it because the characters around her do all the growing for her. She changes by osmosis, which seems to be (spoilers) completely undone by the end. Not every protagonist has to change, but you should be on board for the ride. For some reason, I wasn't for 'Young Adult'. There's a lot I liked about this film, but it just felt...incomplete in a way.

Cody's best work, as Young Adult is a pretty sinister look at suburbia and the error of happiness. Cody throws in some legitimate fantasy elements when she expects us to believe that Charlize Theron would ever have sex with Patton Oswalt.

Brilliant script by Diablo Cody. Charlize Theron She delivers a solid performance as the neurotic hot mess Mavis Gary. It's actually a tragedy masqueraded as a comedy, a female-version of manchild, who does not love (whether it's romantic or familial) and who does not find redemption after her crucifiction. Young Adult is a anti-cliche anti-love anti-comedy, a breath of fresh air in this tired, repetitive, out-of-idea genre.
