The worst of both worlds: blatant pandering to the youth market (stickin' it to The Man, etc.) and pretentious, wanky "artistic" touches that make you want to laugh. No wonder this was honored by The Medveds as one of "The 50 Worst Films Of All Time". The "hero" is a murderous idiot who thinks that Communism is great; the movie lays it on thick in its portrait of America as being full of plastic people and gaudy advertisements, but, y'know, Stalin murdered *at* *least* 20 million people
Disappointing for an Antonioni. Starts out kind of Altmanesque, a naturalistic but somewhat skewed picture of radical hippies contrasted with businessmen in tall buildings, without a clear protagonist. It proceeds to a garden-of-eden sequence, boy and girl in the wild, and the politics take the back seat during a strange outdoors orgy scene. The explosive ending is more visually fetishistic than dramatic. The film is not very involving or thoughtful, and misses the mark as social commentary.
No denying the beautiful cinematography throughout the film, but for me the second half is where it all falls apart. You can pinpoint the start of the second half when the Daria character has to act for more than 10 seconds: she's mind bendingly bad, you dig? Kudos for the Pink Floyd bit (but shitsos for not letting it be the end of the movie), other than that this movie is as facile as it's made out to be.
If you're not a gratingly literal-minded person with no capacity for following a story told strictly via images, there's lots and lots to savor here. Surely one of the most beautifully shot films of all time -- perhaps even the best-looking Antonioni, or at least tied with L'eclisse and The Passenger. In my book, this is one of the Great Flawed Films.
Almost 40 years later, Zabriskie Point exists to teach us more exact and sensitive perceptions about a cultural moment that its original audience was too close to appropriately observe.
For the first 40 minutes, it's pretty lame. A lot of revolutionary hogwash. After you get through all that nonsense however, it gets really good. It's still about the same kinda stuff, but it's done much more elegantly. And beautifully. The cinematography in this film is amazing, some of Antonioni's most impressive imagery. And the ending is incredible, an explosive marriage of music and visuals. Although the film is dated and the message is naive, overall it's not as bad as it's made out to be.
