Summary: A land surveyor comes to a snow-covered village dominated by a castle. Even though he has been ordered to come to do some work for the castle, the exact nature of his job seems to be lost in the intimidating bureaucracy governing the village's life. Based on the unfinished novel by Franz Kafka.

An excellent adaptaion of Kafka's novel. Balabanov expands the rather weak storyline, adding some extra bizarreness and weird humour and relying on extraordinary performances by everyone involved, most notably the surveyor's two helpers. The newly written ending is also just perfect, tying everything neatly up. I believe Russians are the only people who can really understand Kafka.
