Summary: In this animated version of Edgar Allan Poe's story, a traveller arrives at the Usher mansion to find that the sibling inhabitants are living under a mysterious family curse: The brother's senses have become painfully acute, while his sister has become nearly catatonic. As the visitor's stay at the mansion continues, the effects of the curse reach their terrifying climax, and he must choose between his concern for his hosts' safety, and his own. (imdb)

One of Svankmajer's stranger shorts (and this is saying a lot), I was skeptic of this at first but the tension builds up surprisingly well. Despite the entire story being read in voice-over this adaptation is only faithful in a poetic way, translating Usher's mental condition into visual imagery, thus opening the door for somber, surrealistic insanity. Don't bother if you haven't read the story though.

Probably better if you understand Czech and don't have to keep reading the subtitles.

The images of decay are startling, but overall the film is a bit dull. The wordiness of the narrative made it difficult to watch while reading the subtitles, and so it was kind of hard to follow. I prefer Epstein's adaptation.

the most conventional of svankmajer's work's i've seen, every effect he uses actually helps compliment the plot or feel of the movie, but nonstop talking in czech--while producing a story--can get a bit overbearing.
