Summary: Being a failure as a teacher and a familyman, Shinichi tries to escape everyday live by dressing up as "Zebraman", the superhero. Although the TV series whas canceled after only 6 episodes, this cannot stop him from acting out his escape fantasy in a self made zebra-suit. (imdb)
It breaks my heart to give a Miike film such a low score, but this was just all over the place. The tonal shifts were erratic, the pacing was awful and the CGI was lame. Still, the human element was interesting and there was some memorable moments (the Power Rangers spoof featuring Sadako from The Ring was hilarious, and the TV theme was great).
A fun and silly movie, don't make the mistake of taking it too seriously and you'll enjoy it. Lots of good characters that you actually care what happens to.
Intriguing and humorous tale of middle-age fantasy and crisis under the influence of pop-culture. Suffered pacing problems because I was more interested in the human elements of the film rather than the more fantastical, straightforward superhero elements.
Miike is so inconsistent. Great first half, a sweet natured parody/homage of japanese TV superheroes grounded in a semi-real world. But past that, when it tries to make sense of the plot, it's mostly flat scenes that go on for too long. At least the ending makes you cheer for Zebraman, 'cause he's so rad. Flubber as an enemy is not menacing, but the wobbly aliens are cute at least.
entertaining in a quaint power rangers reminiscent way, but there's not a person on the planet who would say that the power rangers were high class cinema. it is cheesy, and sometimes cringe worthy, yet a man dressed in a zebra costume fighting off gelatinous blobs has a certain appeal that i cannot resist.
"Like the faux gays from Japan's defense agency, Miike refuses to get real, but his gonzo, punch-drunk surrealism has never felt so arbitrary." - Ed Gonzalez
