I've been busy as hell and haven't watched many movies in the past few years.
Quick, everyone post all of the best films that have been released in the past few years. I want films that will move my soul and open up chambers in my heart that I didn't know existed. This is not a drill. Should I watch Personal Shopper? Is Phantom Thread actually good and not in fact boring? Was...

Re: Björk has released a statement on Lars von Trier.
Lars Von Trier has always come off as quite perverse and scummy in interviews to me I knew that Lars von Trier was tough to work with for everyone involved on set (John C. Reilly once stormed off set and refused to work with LvT again; Björk acted similarly), but the sexual harassment allegations a...

Re: Who is King of the Critics?
Pauline Kael. I frequently disagree with her, but she's a fantastic writer, she's fiercely independent, she always provides thoughtful defenses of her opinions, and she might be the best weirdo critic of all time. We could use more weirdos in criticism.

Re: Two statements on the state of cinema
It's simply a binary "did you enjoy this movie or not". Really? That's how it works? Just a thumbs up or thumbs down? Sheesh. Why does anyone ever look at it? Yeah, each review is considered in terms of whether it was a "positive" review or a "negative" review, so it's...

Re: Two statements on the state of cinema
I really don't think Rotten Tomatoes should be seen as an indicator of what the greatest films are. It's simply a binary "did you enjoy this movie or not", and that isn't a measure of greatness but it still is a measure of appeal. Often times movies in the 90%+ reach that level because th...

Re: Two statements on the state of cinema
Great post. I think, more than ever before, filmmaking, especially high-budget filmmaking, has become a demographics game. Film producers sit in their boardroom and figure out ways to employ a team of statisticians and demographic wonks that calibrate which films can appeal to the broadest possible ...
