Re: Top 10 favorite films.

An update, since I last posted late Winter of 2011. I think my tastes have slowly refined since then. Not so much that I like different things, just that I've a better grasp on how I rank my films.

1: Empire Strikes Back
2: Inception
3: Leon
4: Return of the King
5: The Man Who Knew Too Little
6: Princess Mononoke
7: SLC Punk
8: Trainspotting
9: Zulu
10: High Fidelity

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Amadeus
3. Black Swan
4. Leon
4. Return of the King
5. The Man Who Knew Too Little
6. Princess Mononoke
7. SLC Punk
8. Fellowship of the Ring
9. Inception
10. High Fidelity

Empire is still the greatest movie of all time to me. I am a huge Star Wars geek. Amadeus was always ranked high, but I've a greater appreciation for it now. I saw Black Swan last summer, which surprised me. I'm in love with Natalie Portman, and now two of her films are in the top 10. I added Fellowship to the list, but I've been going through a Tolkien reading phase, so that might have something to do with it.

Also doing an update.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2. Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
3. Network
4. The Birdcage
5. The Royal Tenenbaums
6. Being John Malkovich
7. Fantastic Mr. Fox
8. Dog Day Afternoon
9. Rushmore
10. Syriana

I was tempted to include Inside Job just to have a Documentary on the list but in the end it just couldn't crack my top 10.

Ah, such an underrated comedy. Personally I think its one of Murray's best roles.

I don't think that movie, that plot, that script would have worked with anyone but Bill Murray in the lead. He made that movie for me.

Here are my 100's. (no particular order of favor)

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
Children of Men
The Departed
No Country for Old Men
Sunshine
Saving Private Ryan
The Way of the Gun
Y Tu Mama Tambien

These are movies that I can watch a million times over and they will still move me. They may not be the best movies ever made, and they may not meet the universal standards of what makes a great movie, but regardless I find them perfect and they are my favorites.

As Armond White said on his 2012 Sight & Sound ballot: "Movies don’t change but we do."

Here's my best attempt at a top ten, over two years after my last:

A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (Steven Spielberg, 2001)
IN A LONELY PLACE (Nicholas Ray, 1950)
JLG/JLG (Jean-Luc Godard, 1994)
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (David Lean, 1962)
MADE IN U.S.A. (Jean-Luc Godard, 1966)
METROPOLIS (Fritz Lang, 1927)
THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (Charles Laughton, 1955)
OPERA (Dario Argento, 1987)
REAR WINDOW (Alfred Hitchcock, 1954)
TOUT VA BIEN (Jean-Luc Godard, 1972)

Who knows what this list will look like if and when I update it 2 or 3 years down the line.
