The Other Guys (2010)

Postby ayall on Mon Nov 22, 2010 12:52 am

Some funny stuff in this movie.

I really like Will Ferrell. Adam McKay knows how to write movies for this guy (see Anchorman, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights).

Movie made me LOL many times.

Example of funny Line from the movie, Samul Jackson yelling at Will Ferrell;
"Shut the Fcuk Up! If I wanna hear you talk, I'll shove my arm up your ass and work your mouth like a puppet!"

I recommend it for a good laugh.

One more example, I'll spoiler alert this one;
Between Marky Mark (Terry) & Will Ferrell (Allen):

Terry Hoitz: No, I don't like you. I think you're a fake cop. The sound of your piss hitting the urinal, it sounds feminine. If you were in the wild, I would attack you, even if you weren't in my food chain. I would go out of my way to attack you. If I were a lion and you were a tuna, I would swim out in the middle of the ocean and freaking eat you and then I'd bang your tuna girlfriend.
Allen Gamble: OK, first off: a lion, swimming in the ocean. Lions don't like water. If you placed it near a river or some sort of fresh water source, that make sense. But you find yourself in the ocean, 20 foot wave, I'm assuming off the coast of South Africa, coming up against a full grown 800 pound tuna with his 20 or 30 friends, you lose that battle, you lose that battle 9 times out of 10. And guess what, you've wandered into our school of tuna and we now have a taste of lion. We've talked to ourselves. We've communicated and said 'You know what, lion tastes good, let's go get some more lion'. We've developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.
Terry Hoitz: How you gonna do that?
Allen Gamble: We will construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We will be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. It's not gonna be days at a time. An hour? Hour forty-five? No problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live, go back to the sea, get some more oxygen, and stalk you. You just lost at your own game. You're outgunned and out-manned.
[pause]
Allen Gamble: Did that go the way you thought it was gonna go? Nope.
The movie was fucking awful, as are all the other Ferrell travesties.

And anyone who uses "LOL" to describe a film is not exactly an expert on humor.

you disapoint me shogun.

you couldn't be more wrong about the movie, ferrell or my sense of humor and choice of strategically using the term "laugh out loud."

You ought to apologize and walk away with your head held in shame.

I thought it was absolutely hilarious. The heavy-handed anti-finance angle was fine by me, and certain absurd bits just had me dying, like the bit about, "It's not a bribe," then they end up at [place], and realize it's a bribe.

Oh NOOO!

I could of course be wrong about your sense of humor; it could be an exquisite thing of refinement and euridition, with a weakness for Will Ferrell being its only blight, but I'm definitely right about using "LOL" as a description and dead right about Ferrell being a one-dimensional comedian whose shtick got real old, real fast.

Initially, Ferrell was amusing in small doses, mostly when impersonating GW Bush on SNL. Then, he got real fucking stupid and annoying.

Anyways, here is a pretty good review of the "movie" (and I use that term loosely);

no worries...

Ferrell is an interesting actor, and i too didn't like him at first.
I actually wasn't a fan of SNL, and I wasn't much of a fan of Ferrell because of that.

I'd say my turning point would be Zoolander, he was funny as sh!t in that... i really enjoyed him in Old School and Wedding Crashers too.

i do think he's very one-dimensional comedy and reminds me of jim carry in that sense.
Will tried to do Stranger then Fiction (which i enjoyed), and Jim tried to do the Truman Show (which i also enjoyed).

It will always be very difficult for these types of comedy-actors to break out, but i think that Will is a "type cast," and when casted well, he does a great job (like in this movie, "the other guys.")

PS - that link doesn't work, i'd love to read it if you could repost it.

Funny you mention both Zoolander (mediocre film) and Wedding Crashers (fucking awful film); both films where he had a much smaller, more limited role. As a side character, his one-dimensional shtick of acting like a zany, selfish manchild is bearable. Any longer, and it gets irritating and loses all humor value.

The difference is that Carrey is way funnier and more unique when he is doing his shtick, AND can pull off "normal, sane" very well. Ferrell, in the instances where he tries to act like more of an everyman, just comes across as really bland and disengaged.

Damn it...of all the Filthy reviews whose link seems to be down, it just had to be that one, didn't it? I'll see if I can find a cached version...

While I agree Jim>Will, i gotta disagree with you on the rest... i think Will can do normal, as i said - stranger then fiction.

but i do prefer him as a "manchild" as you say, hahaha, ELF was also great. Even had Zooey in it...EPIC Ferrell flick.

Filthy reminded me of a wannabe Maddox, but i did find his review of the Social Network charming... i'm surprised you reference that site with with your feelings towards the movie. Anyway, Filthy failed when he gave "There Will Be Blood" a poor rating.

I disagree with Filthy on a bunch of his ratings too (the positive ones as well as the negative), but the point is, he writes from a certain perspective, and he writes well. Ergo, it's worthwhile to read him, even when he is occasionally completely off-base.
