I guess I just have to accept that Hollywood doesn't give a fuck about me any more because I'm over 30. Remember when they used to make movies for adults, too?

Even the "for adult movies" I have seen recently (I keep using the example of "Midnight in Paris") seem like they were made with 12 year-olds as the target audience. Of course, the average Hollywood film today assumes an audience of 8 year-olds, if not temporally, then at least mentally.

Prometheus was the reason I visited theaters in a long time, I guess 2 years or so. As a cinematic experience it was worth it, even though it's lacking in many respects and way too been there in others.
Spoiler: show
I thought it is interesting in a way that may become void if it receives a sequel. Yeah we have the cringeworthy Daniken aliengod and the worst; the ending. Yet the reversal of the basic assumptions that we are intelligent enough to make sense of our place in the universe and the motivations of intelligent life elsewhere should instantly be within our grasp was alluring to me. I wish Ridley dwelt more on this aspect.

Once you throw in the towel and resort to dealing with drooling monsters, werewolves, vampires, chainsaw wackos etc., there's no real hope of being taken seriously--and IMHO, it's better not to try, the pearls before swine principle.

And they do still make movies for adults. So far this year, in my never to be humble opinion:

Shuffle
Detachment
Chronicle (just because it's about teens doesn't mean it isn't adult material)
Act of Valor
The Flowers of War
Chimpanzee
A Dangerous Method
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Margin Call

Plus others that have a wider appeal.

We are talking about scifi here, right? Not fantasy and not other mostly shitty movies in your never to be humble but humbled by essence opinion.

Sounds like we have major definition of sci-fi issues. It didn't start out like it was going to be that way, I was thinking next generation 2001 for the first 30 minutes, but then.....

Yeah, my first impression was that the film will dig way deeper, then it went on running alien checkpoints and became so-so in both departments. But it's definitely scifi, it has it's roots in hard scifi (where every department of speculative science is well fictioned), it's just not an exemplary one.

Report: that is the last film I will see in 3D for a long time, besides the star map scene there was nothing that was particularly enhanced by it. Now there are some things I want to vent about where there wasn't enough space in the minireview.

Spoiler: show
Holy crap were a lot of people stupid in this. Specifically that Holloway guy, these were supposed to be the best and brightest, advanced scientists and whatnot? 1) Everyone takes their helmets off EVEN AFTER they've established that there are hostile creatures/contagious shit in that structure. 2) Holloway being a consistent dick to David for no real good reason, despite him being a mine of information and a massive potential ally. 3) That geologist guy being a general dick for no real good reason, and wanting to run away alone through a massive spooky structure rather than staying with the group when scared. 4) That alien head which is now "sterile", and we've all taken our masks off? Yeah let's bring it back to life and see what happens. 5) The biologist's behavior to the snake-things. Buddy you don't keep approaching things that look creepy as hell and hiss at you, you run in the opposite direction. 6) Holloway not reporting himself in immediately after discovering he has a disease on an alien planet. 7) Hmm what's that mysterious looking creepy thing outside the ship? Let's lower the blast shields and send a guy right up to it to investigate! 8) Theron's entire character. Look angry look angry look angry look angry burn a guy to death look angry look angry run away die.

You know what, my score was too high. Shame too because the first five minutes with Fassbender by himself were so, so promising.

Lol, nice observations on the tryhard crew. I was so glad when Theron's character got the squishy end. David was the most inquisitive of them.

The cast kind of sucks outside of Fassbender's awesome presence and character. I could see people thinking they're passable, but it's odd how little is said about how unimpressive almost everyone is. Alien flicks have never been one for characters of any great complexity, but they were always enjoyable, well-acted, and you could make some sense of their actions.

Spoiler: show
And were the death scenes supposed to be intended as comedy? Cause from the pacing of some(face-hugger from black tar scene, I'm looking at you), to just the way of death (huge wheel of death & Michael Bay / Roland Emmerich-type scene of ship crew joking and triumphant in the face of imminent death) was hitting me as pure unintentional comedy. Even the man burning alive got me in a bizarre and random way. May be it was just my way to get some entertainment out of this mess.

I was kind of lost at the get-go though, cause honestly the idea that it wasn't a general scientific interest, it wasn't some future space colonization / enterprise idea, but a search for our creator that got us to expand and find a planet with life is honestly insulting. From an agnostic perspective.

It's just mind-boggling how little any of what transpired made sense. This shit ain't Tarkovsky what is wrong with people

I agree totally except for the 3D part. I saw MIB3 in 3D and it was excellent. There were 4 3D previews I saw with it one being Prometheus, which looked much better than when I saw the actual film. Wonder if it's the equipment? The Great Gatsby's 3D looked outstanding and appeared to be a definite asset. We need to have a separate 3D rating for films, or at least be sure to rate it if you saw it in 3D....or something.
