Under the Skin

Post by Stewball »

Bizarre, inscrutable. I think I at least partly understood the ending (
the world ironically being saved by a rapist
), but most of the rest was a big ? . I am open to suggestions. It should be mentioned, given another thread going on here, that SJ looks like this was filmed back during her weight problem. She's certainly nothing like the Black Widow, unless they're airbrushing live action movies now. 6/10 barring some relevant new information surfacing.

I think you should give this movie another look. In "Her" Johansson plays a voice without a body, and in "Under the Skin" Johansson plays a body without a voice. With this starting point in mind, I think the film becomes thematically clearer and easier to digest. Also, there's no harm in taking the film at face value - it's almost as simple as an alien on the prowl that begins to develop a sympathy for humanity, nothing more, nothing less. The narrative is definitely a little oblique, but I didn't find the movie all that inscrutable.

I don't interpret the ending as you do at all. I don't think the alien was a threat to the world, necessarily, and I don't think anyone was saved. I do think there's irony in the ending, but I don't see it as you see it. The irony as I see it is that the alien becomes vulnerable to the very thing she used to easily exploit/seduce.

I actually thought of that before I saw the film when I heard that the dialogue was nearly non-existent. So for me, her intelligence, ability to improv and a reliance on expressiveness played to her strengths according to what several critics I've read said about her. The focus on all of that was turned on its head by Her with her character's voice only performance.

I think he got to the point, after 10 years, of just being trapped and with no way out. When Pitt bailed, they dumped the 60% of the script with him in it, which had to have been an incredible void to reconcile. All the synopses say that they're capturing humans for food, as was spelled out in the book, but what happens to the victims here is anything but obvious.
They sink down in the black goo where they can still live, but then one of them just implodes.
WTF? It never even indicates they're aliens. OK, so make them ghosts or something, it's still pointless. The only engaging part was with the malformed man, but even that didn't really go anywhere.

The nudity does set it apart. An extended 3/4 frontal nude shot of Miss Johansson was certainly unexpected; and as far as I can remember, this is the first non-porn genre movie I've seen that had an erect penis in it--a first of sorts I suppose. I should be quick to point out they were separate (albeit contiguous) shots

I don't interpret the ending as you do at all. I don't think the alien was a threat to the world, necessarily, and I don't think anyone was saved.

Well, even if you discount the book and the synopses, what were they doing? It showed at least one guy who dies. Is it OK if they just harvest a few prime specimens now and then?

I do think there's irony in the ending, but I don't see it as you see it. The irony as I see it is that the alien becomes vulnerable to the very thing she used to easily exploit/seduce.
That may be, but as she cooked (ostensibly), so was she cooked. At least she died for her sins with a repentant heart--and I'm having to dig really, really deep here even for that.
If you're arguing for this as just a simple, no brain needed horror flick then I wish they'd have promoted it that way, but IMDb dubed it a drama/sci-fi/thriller.

I've been trolling around the internet looking for pics from this film so I can masturbate. No luck, yet. Maybe my searching skills suck.

It's not really a sexy movie, so you'll probably be disappointed even if you find pictures.

I agree with farCryss on that. If there's one thing I've learned, it's the endless capacity the human race has to produce perverts and fetishists of all shapes and sizes. In fact, I may be the only one who doesn't suffer from those maladies, but I'm not sure.

I'd appreciate that if I was sure you knew what I was talking about, and if I was sure I knew.

I'll masturbate on the principle of it. Maybe I'll play a porn soundtrack in the background and watch the good scenes on mute.

The DVD will be available from 15th July, so you can fap to the movie from the comfort and safety of your own home. Oddly enough, this film comes out in a cinema near me two days after that, which is odd because I've been waiting fucking forever to see this film on the big screen (or at all).
