On an amusing note, this is the movie where Sam Elliott met Katherine Ross (even thought they had both appeared in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 9 years earlier). Playing a married couple in the movie, they would become an actual one 6 years later. Incredibly, they haven't divorced in the 30 years they have been together, although this is Ross's fifth marriage.
